If you want to get your kid in a Spanish school you will need to be resident.
To be resident you need to prove you can support yourself and have healthcare.

Just want to say thanks to everyone who has commented on this post - really helpful.

Aren't air fares getting more expensive though? One thing that would concern me about this is either an airline strike (one happening this week) or a re-occurence of that Iceland volcano - although no doubt Ryanair would keep flying.

What have airfares got to do with leaving Gib for a bit of relaxation?

If you're saying they should live in Gib, which is fair enough - but is it impossible to get relaxation in Gib?

There is the whole of Andalucia across the frontier from Gib, a lot of it accessible as a day trip.
Sierra Nevada for skiing
Granada etc for culture / history
Donana for wildlife
CDS to meet other Brits
Morocco can be visited on a day trip
Portugal is a 3 hour drive away.
I was at Jerez for the F1 testing last week.
Plus lots more

Liznat, if you think it is easy to procure work in Spain you are making a mistake. Unemployment is running at 38% in the Costas and 26% in the rest of Spain. If you are working in the UK love your job, nourish it, love it, keep it and use Spain for holidays.

Morning all. I have seen on the news (as has everyone) that Spain is in economic crisis. My partner and i had planned to move out to Estepona with our daughter. However the economy has made us wary. The plan was we would rent out our property here and rent over there. My husband reckons we wont find work out in Gibraltar (where we want to work) unless we are based over there but i am dubious of going out without a job to go to.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks

It is not so simple to move with children, and although I agree that finding jobs is most important, other important things have to be considered for costs and feasibility.
