Default Which area for NIE number?

Does anyone know which police station or office we need to attend for NIE numbers if we are going to be living about 9kms inland from Guadarmar which is around 30kms from Alicante?

There is apparently a new office in Torrevieja and we know there is one in Oriheula, but the Torrevieja one is closer to us.

We were thinking of going into Elche inland but don't want a wasted journey if that is the wrong area for us.

You can apply to any National Poilce station for the forms, when you have filled them in, return to the same National Police station, with all the documents, ie: Passport, Padron, Originals of your deeds and copy's of them all etc and you should have the NIE within one hour.

Hope this helps..

Thanks for the replies. We have the forms no problem, but how do we know which police station is a national one and how do we know where to find the police stations if we don't live in the area yet?

Hi Gill,

I was just going to tell you that the forms are downloadable from the Ministry of the Interior at the following address:-

http://www.mir.es/sites/mir/modelos/...acion/ex14.pdf

and I will bet that somewhere on that site it tells you where to return it to as well. My Spanish is not up to finding out.

We are buying in Ayamonte and this was our first encounter with Spanish bureaucracy. We went to the local police station, they said no go to the national police across the marina. When we got there it was deserted but eventually a policeman appeared and said no go to the Provincial capital Huelva 30 miles away.

The next day we found the national police station in the very heart of the city in a pedestrianised area and three policemen said no go to another office down on the dock road. We found this at quarter to one and a huge queue stood outside. It closed at two. They let us in in batches, we just made the third batch and joined the wrong queue inside.

We eventually got to the right desk and the lady was very good and helpful but spoke no English. Still in the end the forms were accepted after we had run to the bus station to make extra copies. We were then told to take the receipt to a nearby bank to pay and only then was everything stamped and complete. About ten past two!

Take three copies and the original, don't affix your photos to the original and have a Spanish bank account to debit the few euros of cost to.

The system was in flux at the time but I think it is sorted now and the office was not a police station but a branch office dealing with all sorts of requests like NIE. The girl in front was from Ayamonte spoke some English and helped a lot, she was there to get forms cleared to marry a north African.

Looking back it was good fun and we learnt a lot about Spain and to remember the 5 "Ps" prior preparation prevents poor performance.

Regards,

John.

Use the police station that is closest to you, as you have to have a local address.
And dont believe you will get it in one hour, mine took one month
Nowhere on the forms does it say you need photos ?
Do a search back on old NIE threads for more info.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you had fun and games.

We have seen so much different info on different threads and forums our heads are spinning.

We do not yet have a proper address only number of property, development name, village address and postcode. We will not be coming to Spain again until handing over of the keys by which time we will need the NIE for completion although that is something else we are receiving different information about.

We are not having a mortgage so there will not be a lender who will need the NIE number and I have been told it is only needed for payment of taxes which will not happen until after the purchase. Don't know if that's right either??

This is the first we have heard that there is any cost involved. We do not have a spanish bank account yet. Can we not pay in cash??

We have found a choice of addresses to go to which are called Foreigners Offices (officinas extranjero - excuse the spelling) and these appear to be in Alicante, Elche, Orihuela and Torrevieja only.

According to all the posts we need to be there for the crack of dawn and get ready for a lot of pushing and shoving!!

Lovely - looking forward to it (not)!!!

Smile Re: Which area for NIE number?

Hi Gill,

When we got our NIE's (there were 5) the system was in a state of flux and nobody was quite sure how things would pan out. We wanted to do it ourselves for the experience and our UK based solicitor who offered to get them for us was not sure if he still could or that we had to appear in person.

Now it has settled down you have discovered the right place to go. It is an administrative office not a police station although it may be overseen by the national police. I don't think you have to do it in person there were others in the queue with lots of forms for more than one name.

You do have to pay, not very much say 12 euro's each but they do not accept cash at the "Oficina Extranjero" they will give you a chitty which you take to the nearest bank they will tell you which one (it will be very close) pay there and return with the stamped documentation (It is for the Spanish equivalent of stamp duty) hand this in with all the other paperwork and its done.

You do not get the number immediately they will tell you how long (in our case come back in 7 days) but if you can't they just keep it for you (3 months for us).

Do look at the form on the Ministry of the Interior site that I gave to you in the previous mail you will see at top right space for two passport sized photo's and we certainly had to give ours in. They accepted our site address which is not the address of our villa,so you should be OK.

You do not need the NIE to open a non-resident bank account so you could do that before you go. We are with Grupo Banco Popular and they have a London agent who Fadesa used to open our account with only a photocopy of the photo page of my passport and personal details but no cash! We were then immediately overdrawn since there is a 10 euro stamp duty tax to open the account.

Have a look at their website:-

www.grupobancopopular.es/eng

Jose Antonio Garcia Margeli at 19 Craven Rd London W2 3BP is their London agent. His phone no. is 0207 4027393 They also have a free international helpline in English at 00 800 34 800 800.

Also check them out at:-

http://www.costablanca-buyers-agent....ge/1306120.htm

where I was astounded to find them rated the best! months after I had opened the account.

I think the Notario acts as agent for the Spanish taxman so when you have signed he/she will present you with a tax bill which you have to pay a a specific bank as with the NIE and you also have to pay your Notario fees. So you will need bundles of cash or a euro bankers draft.

Regards,

John.

Slight difference of opinion with the previous post.......

The offices are in National Police Stations.

The NIE is free, apart from the photo copies you need to have done, it doesnt hurt to have an extra copy of each in case they refuse it cos your sig has gone out the box or something like that.

And the top of the form says ( spaces for registration stamps ) not photos.

In the Fuengerola NPS there are different lines for different services so make sure you get in the right line.

This may help you... http://www.euroresidentes.com/Property/faqs/nie.htm

I can only add that the nearest National police station is not allways the answer.
Here is our story.
We went to our nearest NPS at (Osuna 40kms away) only to be told after waiting an hour that we needed to go to the Extranjero dept of the town hall in Seville (a further 100kms away) We arrived at the plaza de Espana in Seville at 14.30 only to find they closed at 14.00. we spent the night in a hotel and returned at 7.00 the next morning to find a long line of people outside. We joined the queue and at 9.00 (after confirming that we were in the right place) were given a ticket. At about 11.00 our number was called and we approached the desk with our forms only to be told that this dept only dealt with none EU nationals.
We were then told that we required a different department that dealt only with Eu member states.
We eventually found the correct office where there was no queue at all, and submitted our forms to a very helpful chap. He told us to return in 2 weeks to collect the completed forms. When we returned 2 weeks later the forms were not ready. But after explaining that we were returning to the UK the next day. The same helpful guy told us to take a seat and he personally took our forms to his boss for them to be signed there and then. 1 hour later we had our NIE numbers.
Isn't Spanish red tape wonderful??

regards
Big Wheels.

Many thanks to all for the invaluable advice. Still not looking forward to it though. We have done plenty of copies of the forms and our passports.

The Ministry of the Interior publishes the details of offices handling 'foreigners' :

http://www.mir.es/sites/mir/director...l_5612328.html

However whilst these may be the main offices there could be others handling NIE applications at the Policia Nacional. Am not certain, but many of these addresses are the same building as the Policia.

Just found this thread, you may already have been to spain, done your queuing etc and got your number. However, if you haven't and you don't need it absolutely immediately, it is possible to get it done via the spanish consulate. We got ours through the one in Draycott Place, Chelsea. Essentially what you do is fill all the forms in and get your photos etc and then you have to go to the consulate in person between certain hours (there will be a queue but when we went we only queued for about 40 mins.

They stamp the forms with an official stamp and send them off to Madrid (I think). About 4 weeks later, your NIE arrives through the post to either your UK address or your spanish one, depending which address you give. It costs about £38 each, I seem to remember (sorry, it was a year ago we did this). If you do have to ring the consulate in Draycott place to find out about it, beware that there is a very infamous spanish lady in the department that deal with NIE numbers, she's incredibly rude and just shouts at you all the time to read the website and do what it says on the website and then she puts the phone down!! But sometimes you get someone nice and helpful who will explain it all. But if you look at the website, it does tell you everything you need to know.

It's marginally easier than getting on a plane to spain, finding your way to the local NIE office and queuing up for hourse, particularly if your spanish is a bit ropy or non existent. Details on http://www.conspalon.org/indexeng.html.

Good luck

Don't know actually - it was OK this morning when I did the link - but not this afternoon - maybe its undergoing maintenance.

Anyway, there's another site link here which explains everything you need and has a link to a PDF copy of the NIE application form (all in spanish) you might have to use a translation programme to translate any phrases you dont understand.

http://www.euroresidentes.com/Blogs/...in-britain.htm

There's a link on this site to the spanish consultate page too but that one also comes up with the broadband fault message - v mysterious.
