It is rather traditional. Nice little town. Good resources - lidl, eroski and all that. Lots of restaurants in the area. Not far from the beaches, and generally, inexpensive.
Manacor is just down tbe road. Lots more resources there.
In town? Or in the campo?

Re: The area around Felanitx
Alcudia is very nice and offers a lot - especially the old town - but pretty touristy and incredibly busy in the summer. The second largest ship port is Alcudia - so a number of ferries and cruises leave from there. It's sort of a "mariner's" town. It's also easy access to the mountains and to the wetlands, and some very nice attractions. It won't be cheap, but it's on the coast.
Sa Pobla is a nice old (very old) town not too far from Alcudia, rather sleepy, but that has it's advantages. It's on the train line, too. It's also relatively cheap, like Felanitx.
The southeast tends to be flat and rather lifeless, and touristy due to some of the more "famous" beaches such as es Trenc, which in truth isn't all that great, but it's "famous", and Cala Mondrago, which is beautiful and famous, but jam-packed in summer. Really, jam-jam packed. You won't want to go there.
Santanyi is also a nice town - very old and traditional and has restaurants of great quality - and all over the surrounding area and local villages, too. There is one tiny little village near Santanyi, "Cas Concos" which has many good restaurants in a a town of about half a square Km. The entire region is mainly inhabited by Germans, which might explain why the restaurants are of high quality.
Cal Figuera, on the coast near Santanyi, is a quaint little fishing village, somewhat touristy, but not terribly so. Very pretty, but outside of the high season, very, very sleepy. I would consider living there, though.
Cala d'Or has about as many restaurants as can be physically packed into a town square, and is a nice place, but is extremely touristy and very, very busy in the summer.
Manacor offers perhaps the best combination of modernity with old-world. It's primarily Mallorquin with few extranajeros (well OK there are some south americans and north africans), but has a lot of modern resources, including many major shops and supermarkets, DIY and materials shops, big train/bus station. It's where Rafael Nadal lives, and it's a very nice town, but perhaps a bit larger than what you were seeking. It's not touristy or a particularly pretty town either, but it's not far from the eastern beaches and the people seem to be nice.
Porto Colom used to be a sleepy little fishing village but is rapidly becoming a "hip" place for the yachting set. Lots of posh restaurants around the harbour springing up. I think there is a Michelin-star chef or two operating in Porto Colom now. Needless to say, lots of Germans.
In any case, I'd recommend trying to get a place outside of a reasonably sized town. You'll get the best of all worlds (peace, serenity, but not far from civilisation), and probably get the most for your money.
PM me if you have any other questions - I'll do what I can to help.
