Thanks jean I reckon I could manage to do that when we are on holiday next month I heard that you have to queue for hours to get your N.I.E. number. Can you get an N.I.E. number without having a permanent address because we can't sort anywhere out to rent til our house is sold and if it does sell quickly we are not planning to move until Septemberish. Thanks for any info

Not necessarily ...... we timed it for about 1 pm here at the local Police station and waited for about 15 minutes.
On another forum I read that you can get an NIE issued at the Spanish Embassy in London http://spain.embassyhomepage.com/
Not 100% sure if thats correct but it might be worth a phone call.

well we've still got to get our NIE number was told our solicitor or someone from the estate agents would accompayny us. We haven't got an address there yet and can't buy the property until we have the NIE number so you must not need an address? Was told by several people that after a long wait it only takes minutes to get. passports and copies of it, 3 passport photos are what is required I think

Hi Jean

We bought our house without NIE number, our passport numbers were used instead. We didn't get our NIE's until we came back out after buying about 2 months later. We didn't need any photo's, photo' are for when you take out Residencia which btw is not needed now as Spain was told by EU to change that requirement, as from January 2007 no longer needed but still very handy to have the ID card as you don't need your passport with you all the time.

Unfortunately you don't get a card any more, but a certificate which is not very handy for your wallet!
As I remember we took three copies of our passport with us for our NIE. We never received the original so went back for a duplicate where we just had to produce our passport again.

Hi crispygirl, bit confussed now, when we opened the bank account the other day we wanted a euro one and a sterling one, the bank said we needed an NIE for a sterling one so when we go back and get our NIE we can then open the other account. The estate agent knew the property would not be for permanant living for a while yet but i'm sure they said we needed NIE before completion.

its probably something to do with it being a non-resident bank account and the tax laws ??

Hi,
when we went to move to spain i had the usual, i.e feel scared etc etc etc however as our plan of spain did not last long at all, my only regret is we are back in the uk and will be for a couple more years until we get back out there.

I love it in spain and everyday i wish i was back there.
Just enjoy everyday wherever you are xxxxxx

Didn't need NIE to open a non resident euro account, we don't have a sterling account as Banca March charges you for every account you have, including postage and envelopes, if your sterling is below a certain figure (saving account) then they charge you for that as well. We manage very well with out sterling as we only deal in euros, we do however have our sterling account back in UK for when we are there. HOpe that is a little clearer for you jean.
