Re: Another Sad Incident
On drinking and violence, what comes to mind is that the British "firms" who profess to be supporters of various football clubs actually plan violent attacks on their opposition - they may drink or not drink but their actions arent alcohol related as they just seem to enjoy it - i feel sorry in many ways for young people, particularly boys, because although many these days have all the material things i didnt as a kid, they dont have so many outlets for their testosterone induced aggression - they used to have many youth organisations such as lads clubs and so on ,but sadly people dont always want to give their time. Even though i have mixed feelings about boxing, it served a purpose in enabling young males to get rid of their surplus energy, as did local footie and cricket teams etc...................they do exist but not in the numbers they used to and also more boys left school at l5 to become apprentices, going to night classes after work a few times a week, they didnt have time to hang around the streets so much................i may sound like an old fart but kids really dont have the quality of life i had, the relative freedom to walk down a street in safety. When a fight broke out between boys at school, the teacher would allow it to happen so long as it was fair, one on one and would stop it if it went too far, now, for some reason, some kids have a really nasty streak and would think nothing of several onto one, no sense of fair play...............i dont understand how its got like that.

You said, "The Spanish in Competa don't resent the British presence." what I am saying is that a considerable number obviously do seem to resent your presence. They might not tell you to your face, but writing anonymously to the press they let fly a whole load of abuse. I know Frigiliana well, and I have never really met any anti Brit feeling there, but have read recently in a local forum of locals expressing their dislike of the guiris taking over the village, and how we think we are superior and look down on them all. I think reading the Spanish press, forums etc will give a better idea of what they actually do think of us.

So I dont think it should be a Spanish against British crime. In all countries the group of people that suffer most of the violent crime are males, and this usually happens after drinking or in the more conflictive areas of the town. I am sure British middle aged woment are not viewed in the same way as young males. Lets face it in the UK most violent attacks involve the same age and sex group and the same type of situations, late at night in and around the pubs and clubs. I dont want any posts saying that I think the victims deserved this, I am not blaming anyone. What I am saying is- if you frequent certain places, the chances of being the victim of violence increases greatly. And a red light district is one of those places |

Thats a generality, obviously the subject of this thread is something I have no experience of You are right about that, most Spanish dont hate the Brits, they dont give them a second thought. However, certain groups of British (and all other nationalities) have a reputation, deserved or not, they have a reputation. With the reputation, comes a certain form of behavior, which they try to live up to, and surpass, sometimes to their own detriment. I think it is too simplistic to say that the majority of folks in a town dont like the British. But I bet the majority dont like British holiday makers, drinking, puking, and causing trouble with the locals. Even though the locals may be more at fault, it is not seen that way. It is exactly the same in the UK, the "interlopers" are usually blamed, but that is the way of the world. |

Did I say that? Perhaps you can point that bit out. I have always gotten on very well with them, and have several of what I would regard as very good Spanish friends, going back many years. I speak with several Spanish via skype every week, don't worry about me, I get on alright with them. However, being a Brit, I'm not so naive as to think that there are no Spanish that don't like Brits. So no chips on shoulders here, just a realist that seeks to redress the balance a bit when someone trys to project their view that "The Spanish in Competa don't resent the British presence."
The Spanish are just people, and phrases like "i get on well with them" does not make any sense. It is like saying that you get on with Londeners, impossible, you will like some, dislike some, and hate others. It sounds as though you are talking as if it is a special skill to get on with the Spanish, like snake handling. You get on well with the people you get on well with (I hope you can understand what I am trying to say) whatever the nationality. And you dont get on with the ones you dont get on with. Of course there are Spanish who dont like Brits, there are Brits who dont like some Brits, Spanish that dont like some Spanish, Italians that dont like some Italians. There are dogs that dont like some dogs, lions that dont like some lions, need I go on? There are loads of Spanish I dont get on with and loads of Brits for that matter. But it is a people thing, not a Spanish or racist thing. Most British families would rather stay in a hotel with Spanish families, than a hotel with crowds of Brits on stag weekends. It is not usually nationality that divides the people, it is the difference is lifestyle and the places the frequent, that is the great divider. A middle aged Spanish woman would have more in common with a middle aged British woman than with an 18 year Spanish guy. Just because you speak Spanish does not mean that you understand US, because what I am trying to say is that we are the same as the British, Italians, Americans etc. We dont hate or like the British anymore than they like or hate us. I dont know if I have explained myself very well, but sometimes I feel that the Spanish are viewed as some sort of (enigma)? And we are just people, no more, no less. |

Correct, nothing to do with the Spanish, but as someone said, it won't be long on here before someone decides the Brits got what they deserved. Surprised it was only four onto two, the Spanish normally favour much bigger odds than that, it's rarely if ever one onto one
What has happened to this British one could have happened to another person, native or of any other nationality. The attackers were mob with desires of fight, but personally I don't have constancy that this is usual among Spaniards and British |
Re: Another Sad Incident
Its funny how the very people who complain that threads end up as Britain Vs Spain are the very ones turning it into just that.....
