Shagging prostitutes in the road at 4.30 in the morning, and Spanish threw some eggs at them, so they decided to have a go at them.
A fight started and he got hit on the head with a stick.

I just read both stories too

it's almost like it was 2 different incidents entirely:eek:

Mail

got into a violent confrontation in the car park outside the three-star hotel he was staying in.

diariodemallorca

todo comenzó hacia las cuatro y media de la madrugada, cuando el grupo de españoles increpó a los dos turistas, que estaban manteniendo relaciones sexuales con prostitutas nigerianas en la entrada del número 14 de la calle Galió.
quick translation for those who don't understand it - 'it all started at 4.30 in the morning, when the group of spanish 'reprimanded' the two tourists, who were having sex with nigerian prostitutes in the doorway of 14 c/ Galió.'

it goes on to say that the spanish threw stones & eggs at the tourists who responded with aggression

a totally different take on it.....................

Yes, it just goes to show never trust what you read in the papers.

If it happened like it said in the Mallorca paper then it is a tragic incident, both the lives of the victim and the attackers have been ruined in this incident

It shouldnt have happened and the actions of both groups cant be excused, I have to say if I saw people sh*gging prostitutes in front of my portal I cant tell you how I would react, although that is no excuse really

Correct, nothing to do with the Spanish, but as someone said, it won't be long on here before someone decides the Brits got what they deserved. Surprised it was only four onto two, the Spanish normally favour much bigger odds than that, it's rarely if ever one onto one.

Shagging prostitutes in the road at 4.30 in the morning, and Spanish threw some eggs at them, so they decided to have a go at them.
Thanks for the unnecessary translation, but at least get it correct, it says "eggs and stones". Whilst the eggs wouldn't do much damage, I imagine stones, especially if they are of any size, might just get you a tad upset. When the guy got killed in Cómpeta by about twenty local yobs there were also those that said he must have deserved it. ¡Curioso!

Well it just shows me how lucky I was to walk away from a similar experience. "Excluding the Prostitutes:lol:"

Its always easy to blame the English Victim, Hell every English man will start a fight for no reason so the papers say. Im still wondering how that double decker bus ended up on the moon.

Not sure where you got that from, I dont see any posts that say that

I think the most interesting thing is the difference in stories between the 2 papers. The state of journalism is a real worry of mine, if we cant trust anything we read in the papers then we are unable to form opinions on the world - it "inhibits our freedom" as an American might say.

I feel pity of both sides, I dont side with the British guy just bc he's British. I havent got a clue what happened, hopefully the courts can sort it out

People die every day for all kinds of reasons. Many of them tragic, I am not going to comment on them all and say how sorry I am. That goes without saying

Read the thread again, I could not give a crap about the editorial styles of the papers, a man died at the hands of another man, there is no reason AT ALL that other man needed to pick up a bat/stick/twig, whatever the circumstances, he chose to run the risk of killing someone, HE chose to make the decision to use excessive force, instead of walking away....

Why does everyone assume that what is printed in a british paper wont be correct but when another version of story is read in a spanish paper then that must be the true version? Surely the story could be misrepresented in the Spanish press as well.....

Spanish Court, Spanish Citizens on trial, English Victim dead. I dont think you would get very good odds on the English Family winning that one.

I would put odds on the remaining English person to get a suspended prison sentence for breaking a few articles under the Spanish penal code.

I dont have sympathy for the guy who hit someone with a stick with such force to kill a man.

I have sympathy for the guy who is not going home to his family. Who for whatever reason was killed.

We all know the papers print incorrect information so to be honest we really dont know if these guys were paying for sex. All i know is it is becoming a very sad world.

What an incredibly hateful and xenophobic thing to say

You're basically saying there is no justice system in Spain

Anyway, I'm signing off, dont want to upset anyone else with my "sanctimonious" views and I'm fed up with defending myself

I'll let you get on with discussing how crap everything is in Spain and how Spanish people are evil and British-hating. Enjoy!

What im saying is that the Spanish justice system is as good as the French system, I never said the Spanish were British Hating, But i did infer that the legal system would not swing in favor of the victim.

What on earth could I possibly know about this sort of crime? And the potential outcome.

rugbymatt Sep 3rd 2009 9:01 pm

Re: Another Sad Incident

OK, so I have just had a look at a few sources and from what I can tell they were at it with a couple of Pro's, two Spaniards and a Bulgarian decided to try and wind them up by throwing stones and eggs (premeditated if you think about it) they fought back and in the fight one of them gets a stick around their head and dies.

So the whole thing was instigated by the three young lads, and they were quite obviously looking for a fight, simple.

Seems to me that yet again, excessive alcohol consumption would appear to be at the root of the trouble. Like the huge majority of victims of violence that end up in the emergency departments of hospitals on Friday and Saturday nights. Very very sad. :(

Sign off if you choose, we all luckily have choice. However I think you may be in a minority believing this thread contained even the slightest suggestion of a discussion of 'how crap everything is.......etc'. What a load of old twaddle!

If, and it's a big if because as several people have said, only the folk there at the time actually know, but IF the sources RM found are to be believed then whatever their reasons for doing it, the non-Brits were the aggressors. In this instance. Because let's not kid ourself, this is one incident. Yes one very sad incident for one family. However we shouldn't make it representative of anything other than what happened there, that night.

Re: Another Sad Incident

Even facts don’t seem to help in this case: Two Brits, early hours of the morning, two Nigerian prostitutes, an attack by two Spaniards and a Bulgarian, egg throwing, then a stick and a Brit dies.

Along come a British, and then a Spanish newspaper, with widely different versions of the events.

Quite naturally, discussed on a British expats in Spain site.

What can you comment on, as an expat, based on what you’ve read? I can only say that I was sad to read of it.

The Competa incident was a different story altogether.

Re: Another Sad Incident

I have no inside knowledge of either this or the Competa incident, but I'm willing to bet that both incidents were similar in that they were both alcohol fuelled.

That could well be the case, but the dead man in Competa was an expat resident, like most of us, whereas the Majorca case involved a tourist. I’m not saying that both deaths are not equally regrettable, but for those of us who are resident in Spain, we are naturally concerned when one of us appears to have been killed by a mob of angry Spanish people, who resented the British presence in their town (at that time and in that place and for whatever reasons).

And if that 54-year old in Competa was drunk, and I don’t know whether he was or not, that does not provide any excuse for his murderers.

I live near Competa and have heard a myriad of different stories of that night but without exception ALL OF THEM WERE ALCOHOL FUELLED - I can't understand that you can't see that. The Spanish in Competa don't resent the British presence. What happens in each major UK city at the weekend then ... residents of Manchester resenting other residents of Manchester!!!!!! I'm not excusing what anyone did in either Competa or Majorca - it's truly awful and life shattering for so many - I'm just saying that without the consumption of EXCESSIVE alcohol, 9 times out of 10, arguments don't escalate to that level. In my opinion, and it is just that, MY OPINION, alcohol is the curse here, not the expats, the Spanish or the Bulgarian. :(:(
