He does seem to be more 'reserved' in interviews with the BBC (maybe it's the BBC he has a problem with or maybe it's British media in general) but if you see him interviewed by others he can be witty and charming.

We are, of course, all free to judge as we see fit, however limited the basis for that judgement.

I was - and am - very happy for Andy Murray. Having read some of the comments on this thread I feel lucky and grateful for that - it's clear that his win really peed some people off.

Then again, in a way, that just makes his victory all the sweeter ;)

I totally agree with you.
I saw him win the Brisbane Open back in January this year and his winning speech was really good and sincere. Our new tennis centre was destroyed in the January floods 2011 and he commented on what a great job had been done to restore it. We can't wait to have him back in Brisbane next year.

Re: Andy Murray

Perhaps Andy Murray's "problem" come about because almost as soon as he started playing with the big boys the press were hailing him as the new messiah for British Tennis. The One who was going to give us a place at the top table.
And he didnt, like Henman, he became only known for being Mr Almost, failing at the 3rd hurdle out, never reaching a final

So why should he be polite to people who want to know why he hasnt got further and made good all the promises they have made about him.???

But estimated by Forbes magazine to be have earned $12million dollars in the past 12 months
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19555480
he is reasonably well paid if he is a "failure". Just not yet at the level of Federer and Nadal.

Well what was he supposed to say about your restored tennis centre? He's hardly likely to say it looks crap is he?
Murray certainly does seem to bring out the maternal instinct in some women ( as someone remarked in an earlier post)

I too thought it was not a lot to get excited about "you've done a great job" He's that nice a man he's staying in his London home rather than pop up to Glasgow to join the parade of Scottish Olympians to say thanks to his fans for all their support. He doesn't deserve such fans.

He has many loyal fans and they turned out to see him in Dunblane.

So what if he has no charisma? He is a clean cut lad who lives for tennis not seeking the limelight. A far better role model than many of our football celebrities and boobs and bums out for camera royals. Princess Anne is not very popular but I have more respect for her than Kate and Harry together.

Andy Murray is a great tennis player. The best we have had since Fred Perry and that is all I care about.

You are wasting your breath missile. Apparently because he doesnt like interviews and is sullen, he's a failure and should be hung by his testicles from the nearest tree until he has a smile on his face :D

I've not seen any posts suggesting that course of action, but if you think it might work.........

Much the usual performance at Dunblane, looking like he'd much rather be elsewhere, but no doubt Momma insisted he showed up on parade in front of her friends and much better than socialising with those scruffs at Glasgie.
I've seen much the same comments on other forums, so little point loading all the blame for negativity on BE members.
No doubt he's definitely an exceptional player by UK standards, ...but regarding personality it's maybe best we just accept it and get used to it for what it is or isn't.

In this age of in-your-face celebrity & wannabee culture, being reserved is seen by some as a personality defect rather than simply a personality trait.

Im not blaming BE members .... its a British trait
Always knock the successful Brits if you can .......... :D Ive seen it so many times, it's unbelievable.

Unfortunately, this trait is not exclusive to Brits.

Maybe more of a media trait.

Look at the praise heaped on team GB even by members of the British public who were less than enthusiastic about the whole affair.

No doubt the media will be waiting for one of them to step a little out of line and gleefully jump on it with splash headlines.

They build em up great, but even more they enjoy knocking them back down.

Jeeeeez leave it out the guys got little personality, the wife has mentioned for years just how grumpy and miserable he is, this isn't knocking him cos he's Scottish, or that he is now a champion and it's a British disease, it's great he as won, but he's a misearble Git, yes he is a bit better at interview, but he looks like he's lost a pound and found a penny. Hope he wins some more majors and i especially hope he starts to smile and enjoy it, but I doubt he will change.

Re: Andy Murray

A Smile costs nothing, but gives much.

It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give.

It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.

None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and none is so poor, but that he can be made rich by it.

A Smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship.

It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and it is nature’s best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone, until it is given away.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile,
Especially if they're called Andy. :(

Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.
