If a black couple had asked if there were any other black people wanting to meet up would there still have been the same reactions or are some of these comments just a case of patronising selective discrimination?
You don't seriously expect me to let everyone know I'm gay after these comments do you?
Oh shit!.............did I just type that out loud?..........bugger..............where's the edit button?

and ref your first comment, well I can't speak for anyone else, of course... but I'd have found it equally disconcerting, yes.

OP knows my concerns about being seen to criticise in any way (which in any case isn't for me to do); however saying you'd like to meet up with other single mothers, or civil war re-enacters, or ramblers, isn't the same as saying you'd like to meet up with other middle-aged heterosexual couples. I think the most relevant comments have been along the lines of identifying that some people's attitudes to homosexuality preclude meeting potential friends because of the possibility of encountering pre-conceived ideas before any opportunity of understanding/friendship can take place. Doesn't take away my misgivings about the notion of, for example, me & OH seeking out another couple (or individual, or couples, or whatever) for friendship simply on the ground that we are heterosexual. I know JnK obviously has friends full stop with no thought to their sexual leanings. With that, and only that, in mind, the thread does no favours.

Maybe the old adage "walk a mile in my shoes" would work. I despise discrimination on any grounds whatsoever and believe me I've seen a lot of it having lived in South Africa for many years. Why do we all congregate on this site when the only thing we have in common is being an "expat"... why can't people seek other people merely for friendship on whatever grounds they want, be it sexual orientation, religion, colour, nationality, stamp collecting, bird watching, or anything else. I don't get in this day and age why it's a big deal although I do understand why, if there are any other gay and lesbian people on this forum, they don't stand up and be picked on ... sorry counted.

Actually.... the biggest reason I come to this site is to procrastinate. I've been an expat and just returned to the UK.

[/QUOTE]JnK I´m sure you´ve accepted there are bigots out there. Thankfully, I´m not one of them. I hope you find the friends you are looking for. Good luck. JJ

Well... I have never made a secret of my relationship... but I come to the forum for the general camaraderie and people's orientation is normally the last thing on my mind. It never even crossed my mind to wonder how many people on here are gay or straight. I never really saw this as the place to 'stand up and be counted' for anything, really... and have never experienced an issue with any of my posts that may mention my relationship.

Certainly sounds like discrimination against un-gay young or old people to me.

There are indeed bigots out there. Thankfully (I hope) I'm not one of them either and I also hope JnK finds friends whoever they may be.
