Hi, we're thinking of buying a Spanish reg.camper which is currently in the Uk, we'd collect it this summer and dawdle back by the most scenic route we can find!
I've sent the Jefatura del Traffico in Huelva an enquiry regarding its legal status etc (great service by email in max 8 hours by the way).
Anyone know of an agent who could handle the change of registration for us?

Hi
If you want to "do it yourself" I can send you the procedure. You´ll need a bit of Spanish and the knowledge where the offices are. But Beware; not all campervans are "type tested". If it has not got a "Certificate of European Conformity" then don´t touch it with a barge pole. To get it through the ITV you may have to take it to either Madrid or Barcelona to have a theoretical crash test done - last I heard it cost 1,800€!

Hi Dave- it's already Spanish registered with a current ITV until November so this shouldn't be a problem should it? Just a matter of change of ownership. I know'just' is a relative term with Spanish bureaucracy!

Hi
In theory no BUT we had a client we changed to Spanish number plates some years ago. He just had his annual ITV and it failed as it only had one high intensity rear light on the wrong side! They changed the law over a year ago - but decided to fail it now !!!!
So whilst it should be OK, you are the one that may be left holding the baby; but if it was originally bought in Spain then exported, not rematriculated in Spain then I´ll keep my fingers crossed for you

Thanks for the advice- it's only been out of Spain for three weeks and I'm checking- very thoroughly!- that all paperwork and matching ID of the owner etc. is present. My only problem might be insuring it to drive back if I can't get back here to do all the paperwork- hence perhaps using an agent?

A gestor will do it for you, for a price, but I dont know how to do it myself (went through a salesman when I did it) - got the answer in a few minutes even via an official fax. The Ford guy mentioned here will know about it too... and perhaps you have already done that when you mention the Jefatura del Traffico in Huelva. Not sure of all the terminology in Spain.
Good luck

Could you let me know where the Ford garage is as I need to put my German licensed car onto Spanish plates. Do I need my NI number in advance? I am registered in Ayamonte already. The car has the International ownership papers.

Hi Frank,
You say the car has "international ownership papers". Assuming you are the owner, then does the car have a European certificate of conformity, or does the log book contain the CO2 emissions?.
You will need NIE, Empadron, preferable residencia although not strictly necessary, it does make life easier sometimes.
You will need to obtain a Ficha technical reducida, get the first ITV done, then go to the tax office (Hacienda or Agencia tribunal). Once more assuming yu have not imported the car as part of your goods and chattels within the last 60 days you will then have to pay the first registration tax.
Next stop is the Ayuntamiento to pay the road tax, then to trafico to obtain the necessary log book. Finally you can get your new number plates.
