No person under 14 may ride a motorcycle. 14 years olds may ride motorcycles up to 50 cc. 16 is the minim age to ride machines from 50cc to 125cc and 18 for machines over 125 cc. A licence is required in all cases.

The Law for riding a motorcycle here on mainland Spain changed last October 2004 the min age to ride a Motorcycle of 50 cc is now 16 years old. to ride without a licence, insurance, current ITV, (MOT)or helmet is an offence. This could lead to an on the spot fine and or the motorcycle confiscated, the law is much the same as in the UK.

Motor Cyclists.
Moto’s, as motorcycles are called in Spain, are subject to the same Laws as other road users, including the reflective jacket rule, which most sensible riders wear all the time anyway. The headlight must be on dipped setting during the day, and an approved crash helmet must be worn, properly fitted and secured, at all times while riding. Penalty points can be awarded for transgressors. Otherwise, the Laws are similar to other EU countries.

Insurance in spain

Living in Spain inevitably brings up the issue of insurance, being it Household, Health., Life or Motor and also for your visits to the Uk, travel!

The easiest way to obtain Insurrance is from Brokers who speak English which there are many in the Costas and Islands and in the major cities of Spain.

Buying property in Spain with a mortgage will require you to take out a Home Owners Insurance Policy and a Life Insurance policy.

Private medical, heath, insurance is also available and can be obtained from many familiar English named Heath Insurance companies. Costs are very competitive and enable you to have all the advantages of first class treatment with English speaking Doctors Consultants and Surgeons.

Car Insurance and Motorcycle Insurance is mandatory. As of 1995, Spanish law requires that all vehicles be covered with at least minimum insurance that would compensate any damage incurred against a third party.

You are required by law to carry your licence and Insurance policy with you in your car, if you do not beware that Spanish police, particularly the Guardia Civil, they are taking special care to find drivers without insurance in order to help them rectify their situation. Now, there is even an agreement between the insurance industry and the police that allows the latter to check the records of the former in order to identify uninsured vehicles.

The price for driving without insurance ranges from 600 to 3,000 euros and the exact amount of the fine depends on what type of vehicle you are driving, what the vehicle is used for and how long you have been driving without insurance.

Hope this helps you .....
