Advice on work in Gibraltar, please.
#1
Although currently living in Lanzarote my partner and I wish to move to the mainland and try to get work in Gibraltar.
The online employment agencies all seem to be looking for Customer Service Reps with a second language.
Now I understand that if they just wanted English speaking people they would just open the window and shout, but can anyone point me in the right direction on where to look for work?
I am considering going over there in January and walking the streets.
Do you think this is a good idea and if so where should I be walking?
I quite like the idea of working back in an office, as I love working on computers and used to be a Systems Information Manager in the NHS, but would be equally happy doing DJ work (quizzes, karaoke, "ordinary" Dj'ing).
BTW, on the DJ side of things... are there any tourist bars in La Linea de Concepcion, or neighbouring areas, that I could try?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and a firm job offer would be received like a diabetic being told he was cured and could eat all the Donuts he wanted.
Rick.

Hi there,
I work in Gibraltar myself. Dual language is always good. A lot of online gaming runs from here, and the call centres are hosted here (though this year its geting smaller, some of the big companies have been relocating!) So not all is good. They do cry out for people who can speak dutch, danish italian, that sort of thing to help. But not all is lost.
Despite the financial crises, the rock is still standing quite high. There seems to be sod all work down the coast yet the company I work for is expanding and expanding.
This side of the Costa Del Sol, La Linea etc, isnt really a touristy side. There are british people here, but theyre either working here or own property here. Except for Day excursions to Gibraltar, most package holiday tourists dont go any further west than Marbella. La Linea despite its proximity to Gibraltar, is predomitly spanish. Obviously there are English there, but they are only there because accomodation is much cheaper than over the border. Its a world away from Fuengirola and Benalmadena.
So, where should you be walking in Gibraltar? Well Europort near the Morrisons houses loads and loads of buildings, and we do sometimes get people popping in with their CVs on the off chance of work. So you could always drop your CV off there. I got a job here using the recruitment agency, Quad Consulting, so get your details registered there, as well as with Recruit Spain and Wemploy. At the moment the job market seems pretty dead. Hopefully in the new year things will pick up.
Best of luck. P.S Pack warm jumpers. Gibraltar gets cold winds!!

fionamw..
Been in the Canaries for 6 years and it gets quieter each year.
Very dead here at the moment and the prospects are not looking good for next year according to projected figures from the Holiday companies.
I've had my worst bookings year since moving here.
onlineamiga...
Thanks for the info.
I've already registered with the companies you've mentioned but as you mentioned they all seem to advertise for people who are bi-lingual and my Spanish is pretty poor.

Been here for 10 weeks now and so far only ONE interview.
This was for a job working with adults with Learning Disabilities (a job I did for 8 years in the UK in the NHS) at a day centre called St. Bernadette's . I had more experience than all of the other applicants put together and I STILL haven't heard anything back from them two weeks after the interview!
Two of the other applicants worked voluntarily there which made me wonder if the result was predetermined. Plus I was the only male there.
I have a test to take at the hospital next week (as I haven't got copies of my O Level results!) for the chance to get a job as a part time Nursing Assistant and then on Friday of next week an interview to work in a Health Authority elderly care home (they must have been interested that I am a qualified masseur and reflexologist).
So I am still hopeful of getting a decent job.
Found a really nice place out past San Roque (can't remember the name of the place but it's next to an industrial park with MediaMarkt, PC City and Toys R Us). A three bedroom bungalow for €450 a month!
10 minutes from Gibraltar (doing 100kph).
From the looks of the queues at the border I will be buying a scooter.
