joemillonare will become famous soon enough
Default 6 months spain, 6 months uk

We our lucky enough to have a home in spain and a home in the uk, we are planning to spend 6 months in each, We also have private pension/investment that will mature when we reach 60, the problem is we have limited savings that will not last us the 10 years until we reach 60, so we have to earn an income to keep us ticking over until then, I am a carpenter by trade and Spain does not seem to be much of an option to earn money, (to many people chasing to few euros) and besides our spanish home still requires some work.
Our plan is to earn as much as possible in the uk to tie us over for the 6 months in Spain, hopefully our uk income tax should not be to high, (2 incomes over a 6 months period).
I dont like flying so we tend to drive, provided our car is legal in uk do we have to register it in spain, and if we do how do we stand when back in uk.
any helpful comments greatly appreciated.

Read the free beer thread at the top of the page.
Put "UK car" in the search at the top, then do one for "UK insurance", then do one for "residencia", then one for "Medical care"
There are loads of threads on these subjects.

Hi Colin,

Yes do a search as above, there have been many "car registration" threads. Where do you live, and how is your Spanish. The spanish love forms and "wild goose chases"

If she has been here 3 months she should apply for it too.
You also need to re register the car to Spanish plates.

How can you be sure? I thought the govnt had still to ratify their decision? & in the present climate all funds would be gratefully received so they may go back on the plan?
sorry to seem doubtful but if you can point me at an official website, or whatever, to show me I'll gladly apologise for being nitpicky... (and be doubly glad cos it'll change our lives!)

I'm sorry, but I can't refer you to a web page but I can suggest you contact Blevins Franks who are repeatedly putting out news sheets stating this.

I have had meetings with them where I have queeried the facts but they are adamant.

I too hope it's gone as it will make a big difference for us too

The new Government made this part of their manifesto before they were elected, so I would think it would be pretty silly of them to go back on something that is such a big issue to the voters

My gestoria backs up what Blevin Franks are saying

Joe,

Take the advice JDR gives on Cars.

Mine relates to your potential tax position and is:

Instuct, on a per hour basis restricted to say 4 hours, a International taxation EXPERT that is familiar with EU, UK and Spanish Tax laws to provide you with a written opinion on what you should do Tax wise.

4 Hours of their time will cost you no more than 2,000 Euro.

Well worth it as reading between the lines you and your wife are likely to be considered Tax Resident in both the UK and Spain and this , for instance, means the DTT rules wont save you from the Spanish taxing any "tax free" lump sum you take from your private pension in the UK at, IFICR, 40%.

Best
