What would you pay for a nice one/two bedroom place near the sea, fully furnished, air-con, just have to pay your electric bill. Quiet nice area, nice place for a middle aged gent to entertain his ldy friends? Playa De Ingles or Playa De Americas.

Australia, sadly is one of the less affordable countries these days thanks to the so called resource boom.

Okay for the minority earning big money in the mines...but this has led to one of the most inflated housing markets in the world.

They say wages have increased 400% since 1980...but the housin g market has gone up 1300%...

Perth is more expensive than London it is said. A pint of beer is a little over $11 in the city. Eating out expensive indeed....

Spain with all its faults sounds a far better deal if work is not part of the equation.
Wonder if the Canary Islands are a little too remote though?

You know I have a place in the UK and here, and I find the cost of living in CB North less than the UK (Midlands), and not just be a few quid!

maybe it's renting & kids that makes the difference

although admittedly I get much more house for my money here in Spain than I would in the UK

I agree about food for sure - I was shocked when I was in the UK earlier in the year

Decent middle-of-the-road quality clothes are much cheaper there though

... and if you start counting the cost of school books, school clothes, school materials etc. etc.

As previously stated, it really does boil down to one's personal circumstances.

With 3 children now in ESO, it's just cost me 1500 euros for the books alone. We then have to pay for notepads, pens, new, better calculators etc. etc.

Now you've got me started .....

As I have only been in Spain for the past 9 months have to agree with you, Spain is cheaper than UK for nearly everything, only electrical goods and a couple of other things are dearer.

The term RipOff Britain comes to mind, too many people making profit on profit and I don't just mean the Govt.

Have to agree with you Mitzy!

Even though we pay more for electricity here (we use the A/C a lot), the cost of living is a lot less expensive here over all.
