Re: Relocating to US from UK

Agree with 2-3x, that works as a general estimate for most day-to-day, groceries (eye-watering), travel. Petrol is much cheaper, but insurance, car prices and services more than outweigh it.
As...

Re: Citizenship application.

But I'm not aware of any state that taxes citizens differently to PRs (and agree with LT1 that the Federal situation is also unchanged). This assumes you live in the US and are therefore tax-resident...

Re: UK to USA - Following daughter and US Son-in-Law - Best Path

On the visa front christmasoompa gives a good summary. You can visit for stretches but leave yourself margin of error for the unexpected because overstaying even accidentally could be catastrophic. I...

Re: BBC online now charging US located persons?

Even just using Reader Mode on your browser (F9 on Firefox for Windows) will bypass this for now.

Re: Anyone entered the US recently 2025 on their green card

Cases that are reported are generally sparse on detail.
Some don't mention any reasonable cause 1...

Re: Fishing

The difference is likely less suffering.
The lives of animals in most factory farms, from which almost all meat comes, is entirely one of suffering. They have been selectively bred to produce meat...

Re: LPR taking trip from US to UK, re-entering, should I be concerned?

To what were you alluding then, when you brought up the notion of PFI? How is it relevant to the situation? How do you believe if differs from passing on US soil?

Re: LPR taking trip from US to UK, re-entering, should I be concerned?

S Folinsky - you raised the notion of pre-flight inspection - what benefit do you know of?

Re: LPR taking trip from US to UK, re-entering, should I be concerned?

The discussion here seems to be focused on the law, which is realistically only part of the picture here. The administration has illegally deported people and failed to return them. In addition,...

Re: Text Help/CP63

Great info thanks, I just submitted an FOI. I doubt it will come through in time (need to reply by May 1) but worth a try and to have it for my records. And if IRS asks for more info, hopefully it...

Re: Text Help/CP63

Yes this is definitely a concern. Especially since it was so long ago. I have been trying to track down old tenancy agreements (only partial coverage), utility bills (none to be found...Bulb even...

Re: Text Help/CP63

I am happy to be corrected, but RSU income is apportioned to source according to the ratio of residence days between grant and vest. In this case, I was completely resident in the UK from grant to...

Re: Text Help/CP63

Thanks GG, appreciate your advice.
This year's taxes were prepared by a Big 4 company who were provided to me by my employer for the first few years after moving to the US in 2022. I am waiting to...

Text Help/CP63

Hi folks, unwittingly got myself into a bit of a tax mess.
I lived in the US under a student visa 2015-2017, moving back to the UK full time in summer 2017. I moved back to the US in 2022.
This...

Re: Moving back home to escape the craziness

Agree there are some budget challenges, predominantly from an aging population (which by the way young immigrants would help with), but it's not credible to say that the US was on a road the...

Re: Moving back home to escape the craziness

Until very recently the US economy was in very good health. Unemployment <4%, inflation <2.5%, moderately good growth. Inequality certainty an issue but a road to bankruptcy it was not.

Re: Moving to US - Credit Card Point Collecting

Agree that getting an Amex will be your best bet. Just note that the platinum is a charge card not a credit card and since you don't have a classic credit limit, it won't help with credit utilization...

Re: Reasonable landscaping costs?

The only way you'll know if it's a "fair" (market) price in your area is by getting two other quotations.
The only way you know if it's worth it to you is by estimating the hours it would take you...

Re: Moving back home to escape the craziness

It's also entirely possible that the administration's actions make living in the UK more risky e.g. through appeasement and support of Putin. At a minimum it seems likely UK + EU will be spending...

Re: Moving back home to escape the craziness

I agree with most of the above - trying to tune it out as much as possible is likely to work well for most people. Shrink your zone of focus to your local area, your family and friends. Some minority...

Re: WTF in America Part 2

The First amendment doesn't provide a carte blanche to say anything.

Encouragement of imminent illegal acts (incitement) is unprotected.
Speech that tends to incite an immediate breach of the...

Re: State Tax Withholding NY/NJ

Thanks Olly, that would make sense! Appreciate the insights.
My colleagues who did submit a normal NJ W-4 have been having double withholdings. It's possible they did something else wrong, or that...

Re: State Tax Withholding NY/NJ

I don't think you are reading what I am saying or understanding how payroll works.
I moved there in 2024 and never completed an NJ W-4.
I have not had any NJ tax withheld since then, so you are...

Re: State Tax Withholding NY/NJ

The whole point is that I don't want to complete an NJ W-4. There is no way to complete an NJ W-4 according to the instructions which also results in zero withholding. I could complete it in...
