When the shop assistant doesn't say thank you as he/she hands back my change and receipt I make a point of saying very clearly "You're welcome". They usually mumble some kind of thanks or look at me...

Hate to break it to you, but Toronto is not all of Canada. It's one city in the second largest country in the world

Don't know where in Canada that was because in my 40+ years there it was a rarity for the person in front to not hold the door for the next person.
