Default Do Aussies have manners?

Out of interest ... Do men open doors for women? Do people give their seat on the bus/tram to the olds or pregnant women? I know its down to the individual but in general? Or am i living in false hope?

From what I hear Aussies have no manners at all, especially the men! A right bunch of disabled parking spot stealers, child's eye-pokers and dog's dirt neglectors by all accounts.

(BB waits for Vash or LPP).

I don't know about Australia, but I haven't seen that sort of behaviour here in the UK for more than a decade (except when I catch my own reflection in a glass door if I'm holding it open for someone). Manners maketh man, as my Granny used to say.

People are people wherever they live and ( sadly ) rude disrespectful or ignorant people are everywhere. If you look for them, sure enough you'll find them. Why would being Australian or otherwise make any difference ?

In Perth last year we were amazed that teenage schoolchidren on the train voluntarily stood up to allow adults to sit down. We saw this happen a few times on different days.

I've never been on a bus here where one of the kids didn't stand up for an adult if it was full.

Used to do the same when I was a kid, but they just don't do it in the UK anymore.

My only 2 gripes about manners are drivers that wont let you out EVER!!! and I've found that if you hold a door open for someone they never say thanks apart from that I think most Aussies are polite, cheerful people!

Back to original question, some do some don't just like anywhere else! They also fart, sneeze, belch etc etc, pretty much like anywhere else too....Hardly some remote amazonian tribe, lots of em look very much like British people and have similar characteristics!

Shame a young oik didnt do this after the Robbie Williams concert when we were packed onto the train back to Perth, I nearly poked him in the eye with my baby bump and still him and his mum did nothing!!

I think it's similar to the UK in terms of manners: some have them and some dont. One thing that still winds me up is people who dont let you cross the road, even if they're going to be stuck in traffic.....

It's like the old crime observation, people DO tend to notice events of politeness and courtesy and them compare and contrast with a place that is in all likelihood 'faster' where you have to make allowances.

As an example, I also have noticed occasional polite acts by Aussie kids, which, if I have to be brutally honest did not happen in the UK, but then I move in 'nicer' (lol) circles or areas here, so don't accordingly award the UK a black mark.

But this doesn't follow all the time that all Aussies are polite and all Poms aren't.

I've found most Australians to be polite, they hold doors open, say "sorry" if they bump into you, that sort of thing.

Coming from Canada, Australians seem extremely polite. In Canada they check over their shoulders to make sure they ARE slamming a door in your face and think nothing of walking into you and then pretending you don't exist.

No more or less than in the UK. The driving seems generally less courteous and the shop assistants (especially till jockies) can be spectacularly rude if I have to sweep a generalisation (and I do).

I did see the Aussies and the Kiwis cough up some wickets rather cheaply recently, so there is hope.

Gabba Gabba Hey!
