I assume you aren't saying that GST makes no sense but PST does? Neither make any sense from where I'm sitting. The government already got tax on the sale of the car when it was first sold!!

And me too - i've never actually sold a car, they've all been scrapped for one reason or another.

Fair enough. Though it sounds like this tax isn't exactly cost effective - I mean, really how big is the private market for second hand cars anyway? Most people I know seem to buy new or lease...

Surely enforcing this is relies on honesty? If I bought a car from some-one I know I would be buying the car for $10 and giving him $990 as a *gift* (for example)

Only because people don't notice so much - they aren't called stealth taxes for nothing. At the end of the day we as consumers are poorer because our income buys less - this by definition will...

It would be nice if those got passed on to consumers but I expect it will be spun differently by businesses when the time comes.
