Re: Welfare State Britain

They're not potential, they are actually happening already (early retirement, voluntary redundancy), but there will be more next year. It's a sh*tstorm waiting to happen.

Re: Welfare State Britain

I agree with you in general, but feel that people who are capable of work should work, not sit on their backsides for years yelling at the footie on the TV, or propping up the bar at the local pub...

Re: Welfare State Britain

There are confidential information lines you can call to grass on benefit cheats.

However, as someone else said, it's not easy to actually get sufficient evidence to hold up in court. I used to...

Re: Welfare State Britain

This is one of the crazy things about quasi-devolution ... decisions on healthcare, education, etc., are different in Wales, England, NI, and Scotland. Scripts are free in Wales, cheap (and will be...

Re: Welfare State Britain

This part of BE is supposed to be for the support of people trying to, who want to, or who have, returned to the UK. You're picking on an easy target rather than address the real problem we've been...

Re: Welfare State Britain

You're missing the point too - the "offending" post was not about welfare state Britain, it was a mean-spirited attack on an individual who deosn't deserve it.

And quit screwing up the quotes!!

Re: Welfare State Britain

I think you are overstating the situation, and reading into it what you want.

The email you replied to was simply stating that she was surprised no-one told her she could get free meds or buy a...

Re: Welfare State Britain

I have no idea what your first sentence means.

I understand your second sentence but I really don't know what point you are making - the system is broken/lax, but easterndawn shouldn't complain...

Re: Welfare State Britain

Didn't know you had to pay tax in the UK to moan about it. Talk about Rip-Off Britain!!

Does that mean long-term non-tax-paying welfare beneficiaries also aren't allowed to moan?

Re: Welfare State Britain

That's a helpful explanation, thanks, I didn't realise that was the situation - but like you said, some people would look at it as working for just £80, rather than a potential stepping stone to a...

Re: Welfare State Britain

Now, I think that is the daft part of the system. My cousin is quite willing to work, and could get part-time work, but if she does so, her benefits will be removed, and she'd be no better off (worse...

Re: Welfare State Britain

If you want to pay as a matter of principal, then pay for the 3-month certificate (£13). Even employed people in Wales pay NOTHING, so getting your prescriptions for free isn't a crime. ;-) If I were...

Re: Welfare State Britain

If you are on benefits, you shouldn't be paying for prescriptions ... and even people earning a wage can buy a 3-month prescription certificate for £13 (or £38 for a 12-month one, in Scotland) that...

It usually starts with someone either deleting text in their response or bolding text and accidentally carrying over into the "[/quote]" tags. Once one person does that, every subsequent message is...

Re: Welfare State Britain

And what happens when we all decide we don't want to work, but we do want to get paid for not working?

What is the purpose of Job Seekers Allowance if it's not for supporting people who are...

Re: Welfare State Britain

When you listen to/watch coverage of the US public's response to the proposed idea of eligibility for health care for everyone, you realise the good side to the UK's NHS and wellfare system. In the...
