Only way is to know the price of things. Bartering is just the way its done in certain cultures. If you're not willing to do it you're going to pay over the odds. It's just how it is.

Do similar but generally just book flights, accom and a car (if need be) and then make the rest up as I go along.

May go online a few days before I leave to see whats about.

Where did you visit? I've been a few times and if i'm honest didn't really rate it compared with other places in SEA but my best friend has been there a few months now and thinks its awesome.
