As a red head with practically zero UV tolerance who grew up in various countries hot and cold, I probably think I do know somethign about it. More than someone without red hair, for example.

The OP shouldn't believe scaremongering stuff like this. UV can be managed perfectly safely with a little knowledge about the science, an accurate UV forecast and the right clothes/sun block, etc.

Totally agree - which is why daily UV charts year round would educate people including new arrivals. Maybe they're worried about people's reaction to UV 14 and so on?

Lots of things affect UV...

It's not silly to report it on the news because often it is not dangerously high, in which case people don't need to put on sun block. The over-use of sun block is now being linked to vitamin D...
