Great website for the daily UV reading. www.arpansa.gov.au

In Bris for eg, the UV rating is often much higher than you would think very early morning. Right now its going out of safe levels around 7.30 am, in summer that can be 6.30 am. Its amazing how early the UV becomes dangerous.

Edit. Just looking at the BOM website and its prediction for UV today (bris ) was a top of 16 !!!!!. Thats higher than the arpansa one, so maybe BOM as well.

I saw a guy driving along Toorak Rd with what appeared to be a very nice pair of Italian brogues on his roof!

In some parts of northern Australia it is pretty high all year round. In the southern cities there is basically no UV problem at all April - September, October and March you have to be careful, and November - February it's just a constant alert really. Depending on skin colour of course.

Read this article and understand benefits of UV rays (sunlight)
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/opinions/4060/

Don't be overly scared of UV rays.

They can, and many schools do, but obviously some don't.

Looking at the BOM site, the UV is dangerously extreme/high all day really.

So I always assume it is dangerous.

I don't see it as not being dangerous and perhaps it's almost silly to report it on the news. People know the sun is a big thing here....they just have to remember to do something about it.

I confess that a few summers went by without me wearing sunnies. (I find myself nipping out to mow the yard, forget to put them on).

I do work in an office though.

It's not silly to report it on the news because often it is not dangerously high, in which case people don't need to put on sun block. The over-use of sun block is now being linked to vitamin D deficiency, I think, and this is largely because of people just presuming the sun is dangerous all the time. There is a balance and regular daily TV reports would help people get the judgement right.

There can be a link between temperature and UV, but temperature is not a direct causal factor as some seem to think. Due to complex weather patterns over Antarctica the UV can often be very high in the Australian spring well before the temperature warms up, and I would hazard a guess that this period in the year is one of the most dangerous for this reason.
