My understanding is thus;
Yes, you can lodge the paper work and go for an AOS while in the USA on the E3. The problem with that is that there is a pretty big back log of those, and its a very real...

I'm 43, and its a 2 year work visa. I have to renew every two years.

Update.
Went to the SSA (Social Security Administration) on Friday, they confirmed that my wife does not qualify for a SSN, and that they have nothing to give her that would help confirm her identy....

I would have thought that her Australian passport with the I-94 should have been enough, its on THEIR list for crying out loud......

We have been in SoCal for three months on an E3 visa.
I got my SSN 1 week after arriving. Wife (and kids) are on E3D's and as such do not qualify for a SSN.
