Re: Suspension of benefits and Delayed Retirement Credits

Thanks for your replies. The official language seems to be "suspend": https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/suspend.html

My calls to SSA were after I sent a letter specifically asking...

Re: UK Personal Pensions and Trusts

Thanks for the replies. After talking to my friend about his situation, I don't think I fully understand how the mechanics of NT tax code work.

Here's how it appears to me:

1) You apply for a...

Re: UK Personal Pensions and Trusts

That's an interesting nuance between lump-sum and regular payments. Now I am wondering how this applies to the UK state pension. I expect to be in a position where my state pension will exceed the...

Re: UK Personal Pensions and Trusts

I called Standard Life and they will not let me drawdown from the old plans. Basically because they are old. It's not clear exactly why this is not possible or if it ever was. My understanding is...

Re: UK Personal Pensions and Trusts

Thanks for detailed reply. So, maybe converting to a trust based scheme is the way to go. I would just have to live with the small uncertainty that this would cause a problem later on.

I am a...

Re: UK Personal Pensions and Trusts

A few more details: I have talked to the provider, but mostly about how long it would take to get money out as I wanted to make a withdrawal before the end of the UK tax year. They said I must...

UK Personal Pensions and Trusts

I recently tried to withdraw lump sums from Personal Pensions established with Standard Life in 1989. During the application process online, the website lets me know that I need to convert to an...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

I expect to retire in the next 1-3 years. I can decide the exact timing. Are there employment requirements to be able to make a full years payment and still get credit for the full year?

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

Guess I shouldn't have used USPS, ShipBob says:

There is one major con to using USPS for shipping to the UK: tracking packages no longer works once they leave the US. USPS packages are transferred...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

Sent mine in via USPS, 3-5 days for delivery. That was on March 15th. But the tracking says:Label Created, not yet in systemA status update is not yet available on your package. It will be available...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

Just talked to HMRC again. I was told the CR83 needs to be in by April 5th. The payment deadline is 31st July. Previously they also told me that payment could be after that date if the are still...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

Does anyone know the Class 2 rates for 2016/17 to 2022/23?

The Class 3 rates are shown in my NI record and have been uprated to the current rate for years before the current and previous two...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

the dates of paid or unpaid leave in the UK or overseas

Is this asking for all holidays ever taken...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

I was confused about who I was calling. I was calling HMRC on the 0300 200 3500 number. In any case, I called back at 2:45 pm UK time today. It was an hour and 10 minute wait for me too. The person I...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

Anyone know the wait times to get through to DWP? I called at 8:30 am (12:30 am here in Nevada). I waited 50 minutes and gave up.

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

Yes, I agree what's done is done and probably more trouble than it's worth to fix.

I will look again and see if it gives me a number of years I need to contribute. Glasgow Girl's calculation also...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

I met those conditions. So, some of the Class 3 should have been Class 2. Trying so sort that out now seems like a long shot.

Going forward I am still employed and for the years I would be...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

Looks like I have been paying Class 3 instead of Class 2. That's a whole big mess to sort out now since it was 12/13 years ago that I paid.

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

I only came across this thread a couple of days ago! I was in a bit of a panic thinking I was not "grandfathered in" with my existing 30 years of Class 1 and 2 contributions. Eventually, I managed to...
