Re: "Anyone not going to Aus because of the high cost of living and the cr@p exchange

Indeed if you have a state with 7m people out whom 4m reside in one city, the rest must feel a bit left out. But that's the ratio in all other states as well. WA 2m people and 1m in Perth. Victoria...

Re: "Anyone not going to Aus because of the high cost of living and the cr@p exchange

If we return to the topic of government, is there another layer of government between the local level and the state level? Or are the local units of government huge themselves? IIRC, the city of...

Re: "Anyone not going to Aus because of the high cost of living and the cr@p exchange

Indeed, there is federalism in countries like Germany or Austria which only were unitary during the nazi-period but otherwise never.

However, as I said, unitarism could never work in a country...

Re: "Anyone not going to Aus because of the high cost of living and the cr@p exchange

I'm very interested in this point about the ratio of public sector workers compared to other countries. My understanding is that federalism is expensive, it is an expensive system of government to...

Re: "Anyone not going to Aus because of the high cost of living and the cr@p exchange

Is the cost of living in Australia higher than in the UK? Of course, a sparsely populated country with vast distances is always a more expensive place to live in than a similar compact country but...

Re: NZ electoral-system referendum

Now you are just being silly. You linked some threads which I have posted in 2008 and this current NZ referendum is happening this year. Find out the facts, FFS!

Your disliking of me has clouded...

Re: NZ electoral-system referendum

Hey moderator! I can really sense that you really don't like me at all and as you seem to be the moderator of the Aussie forum too, guess what, I'm gonna please you and leave this forum for good. I'd...

Re: NZ electoral-system referendum

Now you are completely mistaken my dear moderator! Later on this year in conjunction with the NZ general elections there will be a referendum on the electoral system.

I mean, this year 2011!

NZ electoral-system referendum

This news has completely escaped my attention until now:

What are your views on this issue? Are you going to change the...

Re: Christchurch no longer hosting Rugby World Cup games

It is an extremely long tournament. Starts on September the 9th and ends on October the 23th.

Re: Is republic dead and buried?

Do the civil servants in Australia have to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen? I don't think so as it is voluntary even in the UK itself nowadays.

Do the Australian MP's have to swear that...

Re: Why exactly do kiwis emigrate to Australia?

A very interesting post! You don't even yourself consider yourself first as an Aussie and then as some ex-British? However, probably you are just very well aware of the real world. The country you...

Re: Is republic dead and buried?

I'm noticing the growth of the argument that whether there is a republic or not it would not change people's lives etc.

Similarly, the opposition to change keepon saying that the issue is not...

Re: Christchurch no longer hosting Rugby World Cup games

Understandable but I think a substantial share of the revenue of the tournament should be given to the relief-fund.

Re: Is republic dead and buried?

Interesting to notice that the same arguments are still used by both sides as in 1999. In Australia hardly anyone defends the monarchy because of the system itself that it is part of the history and...

Re: Why exactly do kiwis emigrate to Australia?

Isn't it only natural that those born and raised in a country will never fully consider those who have moved to that country later on their lives as "real" countrymen of that country? Or perhaps...

Re: Why exactly do kiwis emigrate to Australia?

Well, I'm sure that is the case in almost all of the countries of the world but one would have thought that a country like NZ were an exception as such a large amount of its population was born...

Re: Is republic dead and buried?

The president of the Republic of Ireland has hardly any political power at all but is elected by the people and I highly doubt that the Irish would rather have someone from a foreign country as their...

Re: Is republic dead and buried?

One must remember that the GG may have very large powers if there is a political deadlock as happened in 1975 when the then GG dismissed the government and nominated the leader of opposition as new...

Re: Is republic dead and buried?

Funny how no-one has mentioned the possibility that Britain itself became a republic. At least then Australia would become one too, or what? Of course the idea of Britain becoming a republic seems...

Ok, I admit that my OP was perhaps a bit patronising therefore I can understand the hostile response. My apologies, it wasn't meant to be offensive or patronising.

But if we get back on the...

Re: Is republic dead and buried?

54%-46% was the outcome of the referendum in favour of the no-vote 12 years ago. I don't think that is such a convincing margin that would suggest that it could never change the other way round.

Re: Is republic dead and buried?

In 2016 the Queen will only be 90 so if she has anything of the genes of her mother she'll certainly still be around and then she will surpass Victoria as the longest reigning monarch.

I think she...
