Re: ETA in effect for Canadians 25 February 2026

But you're not an actual Canadian. You're a Brit living in Canada who chooses to present as having a Canadian identity. You'll always be a biological Brit.

Re: ETA in effect for Canadians 25 February 2026

It's very much akin to the bleating about unindexed pensions. Driven by a desire to take from the UK, in one case identity, in the other money, while contributing nothing. If we were brown the Daily...

Re: ETA in effect for Canadians 25 February 2026

An impoverished traveler could pay for the passport by taking the seat offered instead of selecting one and by bringing a sandwich.

Re: ETA in effect for Canadians 25 February 2026

This seems bonkers to me when you could just get the passport. Why do you think you can't be refused entry? You wouldn't have the proper documents.

You might be able to throw yourself upon the...

Re: Change to Dual Nationals travel to UK 26th Feb 2026

Surely even knowing of the existence of the frothing loon network would be grounds to send you back to Rhodesia.

Re: 27M from Hull - Thinking about Vancouver or Toronto

Among people I know, that's true. Everyone works all the time. Vancouver has the reputation of being more relaxed but look at the rent, somehow it has to be paid.

I wouldn't say the...

Re: 27M from Hull - Thinking about Vancouver or Toronto

I think it's a fallacy. My daughter in Vancouver has much the same lifestyle now as we did in Toronto. About 60 hours a week of work for her, many more for her husband. Children scheduled into...

Re: Needed Family Attorney in Ontario

My personal and corporate wills were prepared remotely at reasonable cost by Robert Graham of SV Law (519) 837 2100 [email protected]

I've had them reviewed by another lawyer without any major...

Re: UK Frozen Pensions

Dear Ms. Khan,

The pensions were frozen when I emigrated so I knew what to expect. I could have gone to a country where UK pensions are not frozen but the sums involved are small and I didn't give...

Re: Groceries

Also cheese is expensive. However, unless you're moving from Kensington & Chelsea, the cost of housing in Vancouver will be a massively bigger concern than the cost of groceries.

Re: Setting up as freelancer and biling UK company for work from Canada

I used to do this. I'm a freelancer in Canada and have a numbered company for that purpose. I just billed the UK, and US, clients from the company, same as Canadian ones, except that the HST rate was...

Re: 20....How am I still here?

How are any of us still here?

For me it's become "one more contract and I'm gone". I was out of work for six weeks, listed the condo, sold some furniture, and then another job arrived, so I'm...

Re: Tax on UK State Pension

Perhaps the Canadian tax rate is higher than the UK one and, after credit is given for UK tax paid, $1800 is still owing. $1800 can't be all of the tax on $27+$26 grand.

Re: Tax on UK State Pension

Thanks for that. For me, it's not enough to warrant moving. Buying the missing years was a fabulous investment. After two years of claiming, I have my money back, but it's not worth chasing 8.5+4.1%....

Re: Tax on UK State Pension

Do we know how much the pension typically increases per year in non-frozen locations? Maybe I should move countries, maybe there's not enough in it to matter.

Re: Tax on UK State Pension

You plonk it down on your tax return in April and pay the tax, if any, at that time. It's not taxed in the UK (assuming residency in Canada) and so not double taxed. The CRA do not want to know in...

Re: UK State Pension Life Certificate

I don't think that's unusual. Asking a fee would be rude and I'd go elsewhere for a signature. I'd take my ailments with me.

Re: Getting UK toaster to work in Canada

I once took Canadian peameal bacon to France so I could make the ultimate baguette sandwich. Canada's not a great place for bread.

Re: Getting UK toaster to work in Canada

Rule of Thumb: if it heats up or spins, it's not worth converting.
