Re: Should I move to Canada or Not?

And yet, my daughter was a trauma nurse in Toronto. She emigrated to London with the surgeon who was working across the operating table. "Where's better to get stabbed?" "If you're going to be run...

Re: Should I move to Canada or Not?

Last weekend I drove four hours, each way, to buy beer. "popping over" is not as convenient as the prior posts suggest.

Re: Toronto's beer halls

No.

Other rules that have been relaxed recently:

- beer is now available in servings greater than 4oz. The waiter no longer leaves each customer 10 little glasses when a beer is ordered.

-...

Re: Cost of Living

I work in middle management for a medium sized financial institution in small town Canada. I routinely interview people who haven't yet been to Canada and, indeed, there's an HR protocol to ensure...

Re: Canada's Mennonites

I think "closed commuties" is too strong for Old Order and Conservative Mennonites. They don't live in colonies inaccesible to strangers but trade with local people of any stripe. The guy who...

Re: Canada's Mennonites

That's not true of Mennonites, at least not the 70hp and more commited variations of the religion. There are a few who have become detached from their communities and have regular jobs buf the males...

Re: Canada's Mennonites

There are many Mennonites in Ontario. Old order, progressive, 70hp, every flavour.

Re: Life expectancy falls

It's very noticeable now that people cough and splutter all the time in a way that would have been socially unacceptable before covid. It's usual for people to be visibly ill now.

Re: Brits may soon be able to give blood in Canada

I am so old and have been in Canada so long that I used to donate before we were banned. My infected plasma is already coursing through the veins of the unsuspecting natives. I'll squirt out some...

Re: Decent curry in GTA

I work with umpteen Indians, from India, we talk about Indian restaurants all the time. There's never been any suggestion that an Indian restaurant would not serve the food of India.

I also work...

Re: a recent Pearson experience

I went through Pearson today. Quite successful. Third immigration machine worked. Bags within an hour, I thought I was going to have to say it all went smoothly. The parking payment machine didn't...

Re: a recent Pearson experience

Yep!

I'm flying from Pearson to Gatwick next week, Perhaps that trip will go smoothly and my deep hatred for YYZ will fade.

Re: Groceries

If I care about the price of something, I buy it at Costco. If I'm in Loblaws it's because it's convenient. It's no longer convenient if one looks at the prices and points instead of just whizzing...

Re: Groceries

It will surprise no one that I'm completely slapdash about points collection, I just wave the card when I'm doing the ordinary shopping but don't target particular goods or days. Nonetheless, there's...

Re: Shipping boxes / work permit

What kind of issue are you concerned about; something to do with taxes or import duties? There's nothing to stop someone from shipping all their worldly goods to Canada without living in Canada or...

Re: Interest rates are brutal

I don't think an electric car is a cost driven solution. Nothing wrong with them but, if you just want something boring to get around in, then a used hybrid is the better option. I have a Ford...

Re: Has the Ontario economy died?

Primarily, yes, but as the head of the department of getting rid of people (or whatever we're officially called, perhaps "New Opportunity Facilitation"), I tend to think in terms of Fully Loaded Cost...

I suggest you go to London, stay at Holiday Inn in Camden Town, see the show, and have the time of your life.

Re: Thoughts on Salary required - Family 4

The thrust of that article is that people are paid more in America. I think we all know that. Immigrants come to Canada if they're not eligible for a US visa, they don't typically make a competitive...

Re: Has the Ontario economy died?

The article doesn't state the currency used. It does say " a typical tech employee in Canada makes $83,700 per year" which makes me suppose it's in USD. It's still low for Ontario though; that's only...

Re: a recent Pearson experience

I do use those machines but it's a gamble. Often the machines in the main hall are broken and they hand out the cardboard landing cards. If you have a pen to hand the cardboard is quicker and easier...

Re: Has the Ontario economy died?

I ventured into the west end on the weekend; Birria Catrina, Parallel, it's all it a bit up itself, innit? I had to rush back east, to Allen's, to feel like I was in Toronto.

I get a daily email...
