I managed to get confirmed using the app, thanks. The interesting thing is that there is no record of the lump sum I took. Also, there was no record of me at Equifax at any address, but I left the UK...

I can't get one as far as I know. The identity verification requires two of the following:

UK passport (have)
UK DL (don't have)
Answering questions on credit history from Equifax UK -...

Doesn't look like this is an option any more - they specifically say UK DL, and ask which country it was issued in. They also say it will be checked with the DVLA.

Awreet. Spent quite a bit of time on the 'phone with Aon, and they have now agreed that they will include the AVC pot in the payout, thus rendering the requirement for a SIPP nugatory.

More info for anyone interested in this journey. It looks like by far the most convenient company for me to work with is going to be STM Group/Novia Global.
