Re: Buying a house in Ireland

Thanks for that. He has found a house now and had an offer accepted. He liked Limerick but, as you suggest, even with unemployment at - according to Wikipedia - 28%, not much available at that...

Re: Buying a house in Ireland

Yes, I have the same concerns about how he's going to make money but he says:

Anyhow he is driving round Ireland now looking for properties.

Re: Buying a house in Ireland

Yup, I do object to the Irish and other EU citizens coming over here jumping on the housing list etc. I wish the UK would leave the EU and get control back of its own borders.

I also get sick of...

But does anyone know if you need an Irish bank account and PRSI to buy a house?

Buying a house in Ireland

Friend of mine looking to buy a cheap house in Republic of Ireland. He will be buying cash; no mortgage. He's there now looking at houses. He holds both Australian and Irish passports having been...

Superannuation Question

I know a few posters here are clued up about superannuation etc. My wife and I were in Oz from 1991-5. We became citizens while there. We returned to the UK and can't forsee ourselves returning.

Re: Grey Saturdays make me consider returning to Oz

Crystal is too strong an adjective! When I was contemplating moving back at the end of 2004, I concluded that it had to be a last resort and in the end I decided I hadn't quite reached that stage. ...

Re: Grey Saturdays make me consider returning to Oz

The fact is, I've taken my fair share of risks. Migrating to Oz for 4 years and trying to time the property market by selling up and renting were just a couple. In addition I've had numerous spells...

Re: Grey Saturdays make me consider returning to Oz

Yup, had booked the flights and got the removal quotes. Ended up getting a refund on the flights.

Our problem is that equivalent jobs just don't exist. If I was doing something here that...

Grey Saturdays make me consider returning to Oz

First the good bit.

Our household income is greater than it has ever been - essentially because since September we've both been working full time. We have 2 lovely girls aged 6 and 9. We have a...

Re: Very very Bad IT job Market In Australia :(

To be honest, I think £40k as IT Manager for small to medium sized company is about right.

Where I thought there must have been a typo was the £250k plus expat package to work in Switzerland. ...

Two questions for recent migrants

I haven't visited this forum since 9 August and only then for 5 minutes because returning to Oz went off our agenda, mainly because I got a new job here and my wife also went full time. We just...

Re: Very very Bad IT job Market In Australia :(

So let me get this right. You were earning the princely sum of £20,000 pa and turned down a job paying over 12 times that much (£250,000 pa) to go to Oz and work for £10,000 pa (a "50% pay cut").

Re: 16 years away from the UK, first impressions.

As I said before, we sold up fearing a house price crash and with my job situation we haven't been able to buy back in till now. However, the slowdown at least has started. Prices are stagnant to...

Re: 16 years away from the UK, first impressions.

I won't earn over £50k but between us we will. We don't have an established family here (the family support is in Oz) or a family home (we are renting, waiting for that ellusive house price...

Re: 16 years away from the UK, first impressions.

Well, I'm glad you said that. As you may recall, we were going to move back to Oz in Jan but, despite my having only a temporary job (IT contractor), I concluded that the risks were too great...

Re: Ideas why exchange rate 2.35?

Well, the rate is now 2.38.

THE dollar closed softer today after weaker commodity prices pushed the local currency below US77c. (http://finance.news.com.au/story/0,10166,15745516-31037,00.html)

Re: Ideas why exchange rate 2.35?

I can appreciate the effect of commodity prices on the AUD but I didn't think New Zealand exported loads of commodities. Natch, I appreciate NZ has the highest interest rates in the developed world,...

Yup, all potential migrants really do need to check their potential earning power in Oz very carefully. From the site the OP gave, you'd need to earn in dollars roughly 1.75 times the sterling...

Re: Real Cost-Of-Living

This looks interesting. If you earn £40k here in the UK you need just shy of £30k equivalent in Oz. Even at 2.40 exchange rate that's $72k.

Another interesting index is the Big Mac index -...

Yes, I take your point. However, there are important differences to betting on a sporting event. For a start, I could end up breaking even. So too, there's a strong possibility that the exchange...

Re: Ideas why exchange rate 2.35?

How about the next 6 months? I changed £50k into AUD at 2.59 last year. I changed my mind about going to Oz and changed it back early this year in the 2.40s, gaining close to 6% profit.

I have...

Ideas why exchange rate 2.35?

I see the exchange rate is at 2.35, a level it hasn't seen since Nov/Dec 03. Prior to this we have to go back to June 99 to see this level:
