Re: New overseas remittance tax

Hmmm, I skim-read the document and the way it is worded, it seems to apply to migrants living in the US who transfer money out of the country.

So, maybe if you are living outside the US, it won't...

Re: The FBU in London is working again

That's a minor miracle, and good to hear (though I don't think I'll ever need to contact them again - fingers crossed!)

I wonder what was the reason for them going almost completely...

Re: Mail forwarding from US to UK

It was 19 years ago, but I'm sure I just filled in a form at USPS and they forwarded my mail to the UK for 6 months.

Re: University Home Fees confusion

Well, common sense would say that is how it should apply (though in my decades dealing with international students, I don't remember this ever coming up). However, you have to wonder what would be...

Re: University Home Fees confusion

Interesting question, that I don't think I have seen addressed before - how long out of the UK leads to you losing residence status for the purposes of home fees? I imagine, for example, that a...

Re: When to move money

All I can offer is that, when I returned from the US in 2006 I transferred money to buy my UK house at $2 to the £1, and it's never been as bad since. It seems like a difficult decision, but the...

Re: Quick Q re employer and employee NICs

Here's a simple example (numbers may not be correct, just a demo of the principle).

Bob has a salary of £60k (£5k per month)
Monthly deductions pre-retirement age: £1k income tax, £200 NIC,...

Re: Quick Q re employer and employee NICs

My understanding is as follows:

The employer still pays NICs (but this doesn't affect your net salary). The employer only pays NICs for periods of work AFAIK. So, if you are only paid January to...

Re: UK Self assessment

I've actually found the UK self-assessment more confusing than US, but then when I was in the US I didn't have any UK income (whereas now I'm in the UK, and for many years, I've received both UK and...

Re: Moving back to UK - removal company recommendations

I have vague recollections from back in 2006 that some companies will add a storage element to a move - they will hold in their storage facility (or storage facility of whichever UK company they use...

Re: UK Self assessment

When I referred to "split year", I meant the UK has April to April tax year and US is calendar year tax year (Jan to Dec). This only really matters for people who have to complete both a US and UK...

Re: Social Security in the current climate

Not sure if this has been mentioned already (I scan-read the thread and didn't see anything).

I applied for SS when I was 62 not only because it worked within my overall financial plan but because...

Re: UK Self assessment

It's not too complicated, and it doesn't cost anything to complete a self-assessment (you don't have to buy Turbo Tax software or equivalent). From memory, you have to set up a Government Gateway...

Re: What's happened to UK-yankee?

Have just been pointed towards this thread by DurhamLad, after I had difficulties accessing UK-Yankee. I'll be very disappointed if UK-Yankee is defunct. It's been very useful in the past for me and...

Re: Accessing Aus super from the UK

Re: tax, there are two related questions, namely:

1) Will you be taxed in the UK or Aus for withdrawing your super? That's one I can't answer - but if you would be taxed, one way around it is the...

Re: Accessing Aus super from the UK

Are you currently working? I know nothing about Aus super, and my response below may not suit your situation, but it's a workaround I used when I move back from the US (where I had a 401(k) type...

Re: Driving License Exchange Timescale?

Not 100% sure what you are asking by "timescale".

If you mean "How long do we have?", then you have up to 12 months to change your licence (you can drive on a foreign licence for up to 12 months)....

Re: Stamp duty surcharge refund

Late February, 2019 I received the proceeds from selling my house, having paid additional stamp duty on the house I had already moved to in May of the previous year.

Mid-March 2019, I received my...

Re: Contacting SSA Foreign

Ah, OK, I haven't tried calling them since late 2024 ... though I just noticed maybe I mis-typed the extension number (should possibly be 3926 instead of 23926 ...?)

I recall being much more...

Here is an additional option - although this ostensibly appears to be the same as above, in practice I found this often was more successful in at least being put on hold rather than immediately...

Are you in US or UK? If in UK, I think you are expected to use FBU London. But don't expect anything different. I've been trying to get an answer on their phone since last May - similar experience to...

Re: Considering moving back to the UK

Don't believe anything you see on these TV programmes. I'm astonished at how many influencers and media personalities talk about moving to another country as if it's just a case of getting on a plane...

Avoiding UK bank charges on overseas deposits

Couldn't find anything on this, though I suspect the information might be somewhere in past threads.

I recently realised <<doh>> that Barclays is charging me £6 every time I receive a payment...

Re: No Claims Bonus

It's 18 years since I returned (from the US), so my experience will likely be out of date. However I read an article recently about this situation (one of those "We answer your money problems" the...
