Is funny also reading this thread back cos a few years later I find myself in almost the exact same position...

Stay in (this time) Poland doing online ESL for a low wage OR go into mainstream...

Re: My situation

Yes, I agree Poland isn't perfect and being an expat you are usually a bit unaware (comparatively speaking) of all the internal problems facing your adopted country.

I am in Warsaw as well which...

Re: My situation

Bureaucracy is SLOW

Takes about 1 year to get residence card sorted with months of waiting and not allowed to leave Poland during that time (though can return home).

Lots of red tape. Poles...

Re: moving back from USA to UK - any regrets?

I moved back from 2020-2022

First year was covid lockdown HELL

Second year was PGCE teacher training TORTURE

Both awful years

Though I would say this element of stress of being abroad did...

Re: My situation

Great!

Especially in summer. It might be my favourite country I have lived in. It's efficient. People are kind. Can get by in English. Plenty of work opportunities (even for lowly TEFL).

Cost...

Re: My situation

UPDATE:

I went back for the PGCE but failed the final placement

Then I went to Poland and worked in an international school but got fired from that position.

So I returned to uk and retook...

Re: My situation

Yes and no...

So I have been teaching online for the last 12 months.

I did eventually go to Albania for 5 weeks and lived the 'Digital Nomad' life there during that time, living and teaching....

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

I don't know if it's my 'calling' that's tricky to say. I think I am suited for it in many ways.

Re: My situation

Good point! Career wise it makes sense for me long term.

I guess I'm just dreading it because of future lockdowns and uncertainty in other areas of life putting me in a fight or flight type way...

Re: My situation

I don't really like living on the edge to be honest. I sometimes think I do, but the reality is I get overwhelmed by it quickly.

I have been a teacher for over 10 years and I suppose the PGCE...

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

Just a quick update.

I left Canada in August 2020.

I am currently registered to do a PGCE in September 2021. But I am having doubts. You know, covid and my life being miserable due to lack of...

Re: My situation

So a little update...and it's fascinating reading this back because I left soon after this post.

I quit my job in Canada and so moved back to the UK and was totally unemployed in August of 2020.

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

They ask for police checks for every country you've lived in. Yeah, I was asked for it as part of the application. I actually have a problem of sweating hands which means it's very likely my...

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

From what I have read, the PGCE opens more doors than a masters degree is TESOL. And of course it does give you something you might be able to use later in life if you decide to go back to the UK.

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

Yeah, Canadian experience class. I am just waiting for the fingerprints from Japan to finalise the application.

I went back last time for about 6 weeks in 2017. I was also there in 2016 in the...

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

Exactly, an MA is not a magic wand to university gigs. It is often a requirement, but connections matter much more.

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

Yeah, it wasn't that easy. I just applied to a lot of schools. Most pay you around 20 dollars per hour. But the hard part is getting the hours. And then comes the problem is...do you want the hours?...

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

I haven't 'run from pillar to post and back again, going in circles with no destination or goal in mind' though, I admit this is a fear of mine. It's one reason why I am hesitant to move back to...

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

Oh, this sounds compelling. What happened?

Of course I have a negative self image in me saying 'you're lucky to even have ESL, you should be in a McDonald's flipping burgers!' so I try to remember...

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

From what I understand, the PGCE is accepted in Ontario. I think the PGCE would open up British international schools in other countries. I would want to do that rather than uk classrooms.

I know...

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

Yeah that's a good point. I might have forgotten that. As horribly as teaching CAN be at it's worst, I am not qualified to do anything else. I do have some passion for it. I get into a flow state in...

Re: Should I move back to the UK?

I think the PGCE gives me more options and is something to fall back on. The masters in TESOL is good, but in Japan I think the uni gigs are equally about connections and publication. So it isn't...
