Unfortunately no. This is sadly likely the end of the road. Self sponsorship is possible with a green card (permanent residence - years long and expensive process which you probably aren't applicable...

They should be able to sponsor you for a J1 visa. As far as I know it's the only visa they can sponsor you for, but it's also exactly for something like this (professional training). I'm surprised...

So I just spoke to a VITA volunteer and she said "I don't see why not" but wasn't awfully convincing. I'm going to put it onto my tax forms and report back if it gets pulled up.

It's a science research job. 5 years made up of five 1-year rolling contracts. I read on the Homeland security website that under the 'research scholar program' the visa can be continually renewed...
