Re: self sponsored NIW
I self sponsored. You have to prove that you have a skillset which is extremely rare and difficult, and that the skillset benefits national security. Without an advanced degree that would be near impossible to prove. I hear that sometimes you can substitute work experience for qualifications but you'd need to have years and years of work experience in a unusual and hard to train skill. If your skill isn't unusual and didn't require years of experience then the idea is that an American could easily be trained to do it and so they don't need to bring in a foreigner (you) to do it.

The OP appears to work in cancer research, my husband also looked at the EB-2 NIW (but has decided on EB1-A), he's a specialist in energy also with an advanced degree and is pretty senior i.e. advises governments, and is wheeled out regularly for radio and tv appearances. So from my understanding you do need pretty specialist skills so it will depend on exactly what you do.
I also think you need to ask your company to consult with another immigration firm, as I think they're not playing fair by telling you you don't qualify for any greencard without a degree, it's simply not true. If EB1-A/EB-2 NIW aren't options then it's possible other EB's are i.e. EB-2 or EB-3, but you will need your employer's support for those.
