Could you clarify what is meant by "standard deduction" is that the point where taxation begins on income above that figure?

Thinking more on this, I now reside in Florida which does not have State Income Taxes, only Federal Income Tax. I presume it will be the Fed element of taxation which will apply.

I understand the Agencies you mentioned are all managed by SPPA (Scottish Public Pension Agency)

I use Travel Wise. Theses days its just called Wise.

It costs 2-3 USD but its always reliable and only takes a couple of days.

Paid for initial Visa Application. Paid for Medical. Paid at Embassy Interview. Once I arrived in US I paid for GC. I think the GC payment can be made as soon as the visa is in hand.

I cant give any tips or advice apart from make sure you have all the correct papers. Perhaps look at Health Insurance too.
