Hi and welcome!

I've been in Chicago since mid-2016. Having seen quite a few other US cities, I've got to say, I'm pretty happy with Chicago! Yep it's cold in winter, but I came expecting that.
I...

Re: Moving to San Diego

Based on my experience so far, the US could certainly do with some well-qualified flavourists, so if it's not qualifying for the H1B then it sure should be!

Re: Mobile phone switch over...

I used AT&T's prepaid plan with my UK phone when I first came over, and have been happy to stay on it for the last couple of years.

Alternatively I just used Tracfone prepaid sim for a visiting...

Re: Homeless in RI

So I'm guessing the two bits of the story are somewhat unrelated but combine to create a bit of a perfect storm: No funds and nowhere to live.
I think he should spend his energy on finding a way...

Re: Cellphone contracts

Cricket is owned by AT&T and is PAYG. But AT&T also do their own PAYG plans. I almost went with a Cricket plan because they were consistently cheaper than AT&T, but on further investigation I...

Re: Car for new immigrant

Also, another tip based on my experience of having had a regular sedan and now a SUV. Get an SUV. You already seem to be favouring this option anyway, but I thought I would reinforce it.

Every...

Re: Car for new immigrant

Start studying your future state's driving laws a bit in advance so you can get the licence as soon as you like (Idaho here: https://itd.idaho.gov/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/driver_manual.pdf)

Re: Rant - H1B/L1 is just corporate slavery, crap life

If Barclays is your aspirational employer (been there, done that) in the UK, then I can only wonder how bad your current employer is!

Re: UK to Chicago.. in a couple weeks!

Welcome! I did London to Chicago move a year ago and have loved it so far. Not sure if you're coming from London or if it's elsewhere in the UK, but I've found Chicago to soften the blow of leaving...

Re: Moving from UK to chicago

I moved from London to Chicago last year and so far I love it. I was constantly warned about the "brutal" winters, but I didn't find it too bad - the locals say it was a pretty mild one. I like to...

Re: Hello, I moved to America

I was back in Blighty in June and while there are things I do miss, I was reminded how horrid a lot of high streets are. A plethora of bookmakers, Takeaway shops, trash blowing around. So I guess...

Re: Will cricket really take off in America?

Just on the topic of Rugby League, I think that it would have a good chance in the US. The game is well suited to TV because you can fit all players on screen. The rules are fairly easy to pick. A...

Re: Banking - too good to be true?

Bank of America still hits you with the 3% currency conversion fee though right? Kind of them to not go for $5 + 3%!

Re: Banking - too good to be true?

Cutting the foreign ATM fee is usually only one of the two places they hit you. The other is the currency conversion fee. From their own help section:

Anytime a transaction is initiated in non-US...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I did the Illinois license test. It's really only a 2 part test. Road sign is part of written, and visual is only a "test" by name. You just have to read a line from one of those Snellen charts.

Re: Will my GCSEs be recognised in the US?

I see ads on TV that McDonalds is "America's best first job". So while it may not require much in education qualifications, I'd guess that the target market for hiring is teenagers (implied from the...
