Re: Buying a House

You can ask the question, but I agree with everyone else that this is something you have to judge for yourself. Can you drive by the neighbouring farm and see how it looks, are the fields...

Re: Moving to Yvelines - Villennes-sur-Seines and others

Done a bit of digging on the SNCF website, and Marly le Roi, L'Etand la Ville and Saint Nom la Breteche all look good on paper, as there are regular trains to Saint Cloud in around 20 minutes, and...

Re: Moving to Yvelines - Villennes-sur-Seines and others

Pretty much. My office is slightly outside of Paris and is not near any of the mainline train or RER stations, so while using public transport is possible it is not as convenient as it sounds....

Re: Moving to Yvelines - Villennes-sur-Seines and others

Hi DMU,

Thanks for the welcome and the tips. I had looked at Sevre, Saint-Cloud, Meudon etc, but they all look out of our budget - at least for anything nice. I guess we are tempted by the...

Talking Moving to Yvelines - Villennes-sur-Seines and others

Hi all,

I have been working in Paris for around five years, doing a weekly commute back to the UK. However, we are now talking about finally making a longer term commitment and moving the family...

Re: practicalities of moving to italy

I would agree completely with this. I came to Italy for the first time in my early twenties (granted, many years ago), and had a great year and a half teaching English and experiencing Italy. It's a...

Re: Dog looking for a home. Please help!!!!

I'm really sorry to hear this. As a dog lover, I had been hoping you would find a home for your new friend. She was obviously very poorly when you found her, and if it helps at all you should take...

Exclamation Heating oil supplier in Garfagnana / Lucca

Hi everyone,

We have recently taken possession of our new home near Castiglione / Castelnuovo in the Garfagnana, about an hour north of Lucca. The house is heated using an oil boiler and the oil...

Re: Schools in Rome

I don't think any parents have a totally unbiased view on schools, because all of our experience is limited to the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 children that we have. We have four kids and I am really...

Re: ACCA or CPA "each country"?

Personally, I would go with the ACA, though admittedly I am biased because it's what I studied all those years ago.

I am sure the ACCA is just as good in reality, but I think ACA is seen as the...

Re: Are there better qualifications to emigrate with or is accountancy the best?

I completely agree that you should avoid the law if you are specifically looking for a portable qualification. I studied law before going into accountancy specialising in tax. While their is...

Re: Working in Canada

I looked into this a few years ago, and at the time there was lots of work going in Calgary and Edmonton for people with oil and gas experience. I think it's a very specific lifestyle though, so I...

Re: Translation needed - buying in Tuscany

I completely agree with Modicasa. In my particular case I was confident that I understood exactly what I was signing before I put pen to paper, but you do have to be very careful and this isn't just...

Re: Translation needed - buying in Tuscany

I was gutted when it came to paying my translator.

She was organised by the notaio but didn't really do anything, as her translation was so appalling that I ended up reading the contract in...

Re: Schools

Just to paint the other side of the picture, it isn't so bad all over. While good schools are over subscribed in a lot of areas, that isn't always the case. We live in a rural area of Devon and...

Re: Latest Eurostat House Price Data

It would be interesting to see more long term data.

My perception is that the UK house market has been out performing Italy and most of Europe for the last 15 years or so, even taking into...

Re: English Teaching Prices Milan

I think that's a sensible idea. I spent a year working as an English teacher in Modena and if you are going to do it properly and earn a living then you need to take it seriously. I loved it and it...

Re: Castiglione di Garfagnana - It finally happened

The English project manager in question is based in Italy and I suspect runs a very profitable business providing services to expats. I am not so worried about the quality of his work, which we would...

Re: The long road to Italy (and looking for a pit stop)

Thanks for the tips. I was thinking about Beaune, as it looks about half way and I think the Ibis hotel takes dogs. And given my other half will have the kids, what harm could a drop or two of wine...

The long road to Italy (and looking for a pit stop)

In a few weeks I am planning to drive down to our new place in Italy, so I can take a load of our stuff in the back of the car. The plan is that I will drop the stuff (including two dogs) at the...
