Re: UK Personal Pensions and Trusts

I had some FSAVC's in the UK. When I turned 65 the only option available from that provider was to convert to an annuity (at rates I considered unattractive). With some hired help I rolled over the...

Re: UK Premium bonds/US/UK Citizen/US resident

When I moved to the USA many moons ago, I was strongly advised to cash out my premium bonds prior to departure. That made sense at the time and still does.

Re: Car insurance in California

When I moved to California many moons ago, I was able to get a substantial discount on my auto insurance from Farmers after I supplied evidence of a good driving record in the UK.

Later I switched...

Re: West Coast / Bay Area - Tips

Ahhhh, the bits YOU like...

Besides, those things you mentioned are business practices. C'mon, these things are not totally altruistic -- they're done to generate positive publicity. To "smooth...

Re: West Coast / Bay Area - Tips

Some change is good. Some is bad. Some is a pointless wash.

Furthermore, good .v. bad is quite subjective encompassing personal values, preferences, foibles etc.

I use and like a lot of Google...

Re: West Coast / Bay Area - Tips

This really isn't very complicated.

In the 1980's, anyone paying some attention to the tech industry or the stock market, could see that Silicon Valley was center of gravity for tech. But most of...

On the plus side, the Bay Area offers:

* A year-round climate that is as good as it gets.
* A lot of superb and highly paid job opportunities.
* Some beautiful scenery.

On the down side, the...

Re: Primary schools

That's a useful national starting point. But ultimately, you need more detailed local data.

Also, think about what constitutes "best" for you and your child. Some high schools with the highest...

Re: Best way to build credit score in U.S from U.K

That's outrageous! You used my money without my permission? :)

I was lucky -- when I arrived in the USA I already had two US credit cards in my wallet. Back then (~1992) NatWest owned a small bank...

Re: U.K. Pension application

I didn't know that. Thanks. I think I'll do it myself -- it probably gives me a little more sense of having some control over the process :-)

Re: U.K. Pension application

Hmmmm, I don't think so. In order to receive a UK State Pension I believe you should make your application with the UK authorities. That's what I plan to do in a few months.

However, you must...

BTW, great...

Yes, meet people and do fun stuff. Otherwise, it's like going on a two week vacation and never leaving your hotel room. Except that in your case, it's two years!

Use this as an opportunity...

Re: So expensive to rent a car

Yep. I've seen minivans and SUV's excluded as well as luxury/sports cars.

You really, really have to check out the whole package. IMO, it's worth the effort because the savings can be considerable.

Re: So expensive to rent a car

The insurance provided with some credit cards can be a real money saver. However, you need to check the terms carefully. Coverage is limited and may leave you with more exposure that you're...

Re: Excellent credit rating, what will happen to it in the states?

If buying a new car, the dealers frequently offer great promotional rates as low as 2 or 3%. But some of the smaller used car outfits are unscrupulous and engage in all manner of scams. Great care is...

Re: Auto insurance and proof of UK driving history

Call around. It's a bit hit and miss but you will find someone that's willing to discount based on your UK driving record if you have at least some reasonable supporting documentation.

In a year...
