Re: British teacher relocating to LA: re-certify?

As long as you have a visa you can re certify and LAUSD needs teachers and is hiring.
I had to take the cbest exam, get my degree assessed and then they gave me a tear to pass the CTEL exams as that...

Re: Feeling hopeless

Sorry you lost your nain. I would say give yourself a set amount of time to think on it and do not have kids till you have worked out your feelings. As someone who started my family here in the US I...

Re: Teachers being hired

I teach in California. So far I am finding conditions much better than in the UK and the pay is better too. Less scrutiny and more freedom to choose what you teach compared to the UK.
Teachers here...

Re: What I like about America. [A politics-free thread]

That may be what it is- the latino kids are very easy to like because they are so unentitled and when they do something wrong they are so fast to say 'sorry'.You just do not get that in the UK. When...

Re: What I like about America. [A politics-free thread]

I actually taught in a very good state school in outer London where the students were just lovely but I trained in a different kind of school and that was enough to put anyone off- very rude...

Re: What I like about America. [A politics-free thread]

It is an inner city school- title 1 which means the majority of our kids come from homes with low socio economic status. I was so nervous about starting teaching in a new country, new education...

Re: What I like about America. [A politics-free thread]

I returned to work after many years home with two small kids and I cannot get over how much more enjoyable teaching is here compared to the UK. No ofsted, less teaching to the test and just a much...

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

I forgot to mention that whichever school you go to here, expects annual donations to the school. The schools in the wealthier areas-for example La Canada- it won't be small. La Canada expects a...

Re: Schools - whether US behind UK equivalent

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

You will not need a private school in TO- actually some private schools here have to be avoided- you do get smaller class size but the teachers may not be credentialed- that may not be important to...

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

Julymermaid- I would not worry too much. Thousand Oaks is perfectly pleasant, clean and safe and close to Ventura and all its beaches. I find it a little homogenous and sanitized but that is how a...

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

Yes- easy commute to both places) Pasadena adds time on as the 210 is horrible East at commuter times so LC is a great choice.

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

I would say always negotiate- it worked for us the second time. We got 100 off a 2700 rent for a year. The thing you are up against is most La Canada properties will have a handful of people wanting...

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

Here are some that popped up when I searched Craig's List. You obviously just have to make sure you physically see the property to verify it is real and the person is the owner- as there are scammers...

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

Don't be too daunted- your wife's company is going to help with so much I am sure and if you are renting, you are not committing beyond a 12 month lease. Make sure her company agrees to buy you out...

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

Last point- property taxes here are just over 1%( maybe 1.25). This is every year you are in a home.
So on an 800,000$ home you will have an annual $8000 odd tax bill. It is shocking coming from the...

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

You can contact the school district for maps of catchment areas- all the schools are excellent but the grounds of Paradise Canyon are really special- Palm Crest beautiful too.
I believe La Canada...

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

LA has a lot of language learners so they are very geared up for that more than students transferring from another education system.

I would look at the Common Core first to see what your kids...

Re: Relocating with young Family to LA - Schools, Houses and Areas!

La Canada is an excellent choice. The three elementaries are all excellent as are middle and high. I like the setting of Paradise Canyon the most or Palm Crest. Check out la crescenta next door. It...

Re: Buying a used car, might as well buy new?

Yes we crunched the numbers for the electric cars and the numbers came out in favor of non electric. But I thought 12 k was good for a used prius with low mileage. True about the battery. I think...
