Re: Brooks, Alberta?

Having worked there a couple of times I'll give my honest opinion...

It's a tiny town identical to all the other sub 50,000 towns in Alberta and SK. Strips of hotels, fast food chains and truck...

Re: Ambitious dream ?...... 21 year old

What makes you say that? Different places will suit different people but I'm sure most young people would be happy somewhere in Canada.

Re: After a fall - physio or chiropractor?

OK so I had very little experience with medical matters in the UK and even less so here so I'm basically useless! Are they even called GP surgeries here? Any suggestions in Red Deer? I should have...

Re: After a fall - physio or chiropractor?

Glad I found this thread. I was looking for a chiropractor in Red Deer/Calgary but I'll think again now!

I'm only 26 but my back has never been the greatest and I have just started a job with a...

Re: HS2

This is exactly what it will do. Taking the existing high speed services off the WCML will reduce the difference in speeds of trains on the line and thus hugely increase capacity for local services...

Re: HS2

The West coast mainline is one of the busiest railways in the world, has just undergone a hugely disruptive and expensive upgrade that didn't achieve its goals and will be full soon. It clearly can't...

Re: Don't understand why Albertans aren't more outraged by this

Have you reported this? I fully support you suing the crap out of the company that did it, if they caused it.

Re: Don't understand why Albertans aren't more outraged by this

Just got back from a frac in Saskatchewan yesterday... The media and the people protesting against it really have no idea and are just protesting through ignorance.

If people think fracking is...

Re: Your thoughts please re finances

Luckily the process is very simple (for you at least, not sure about your husband), you just need you and your parent's birth certificates.

Re: Your thoughts please re finances

If you haven't started the ball rolling already, I'd advise to get your citizenship sorted as soon as possible - mine took nearly a year to come through, and that was with me living in Canada.

I guess I was lucky in my previous job that they just matched my contributions to an RRSP.

I found some info here on the unlocking of small amounts:

Re: Locked in pensions

True, but they're not really trusting their employees much. I'll take what they offer but it's not ideal, I'd rather the flexibility of an RRSP.

Re: Locked in pensions

Oh no definitely not! I probably wasn't very clear. They will only put their contribution into their 'locked in' pension - I'd rather take this out and put it into an RRSP along with the rest of my...

Locked in pensions

Anyone have much knowledge about these?

I've just started a new job and from the looks of things while they will match my contributions to a pension (not necessarily theirs), they will only put...

Re: Car financing

It might, it might not. On average an older car will need more in repairs though. There are no MOTs here either which makes issues much easier to hide/miss, and even if nothing major goes wrong,...

Re: Car financing

I didn't plan on staying here and getting a vehicle but even if I did, I have about 3x the disposable income here than the UK and will still have way more money after paying the modest debt I will...

Re: Car financing

Shame they're pretty rubbish about everything else though! Their opening hours suck and they must be the only bank to not offer visa debit. I'm going to stick with td for my checking account unless...

That's good to hear then. I'll try again with TD and if not I'll ask other banks until one will help.

Re: Car financing

Yep, citizenship in fact. I don't think I'll have too much issue in about 6 months or a year when I've been paying into my cc for that long but it's just now with the lack of history.

Thanks for replying, that was my first choice, but my bank (TD) seem reluctant to give me one - saying that it was the hardest sort of credit to get. Shall I keep pestering them or are other banks...

So I've been in Canada for 18+ months and I've got to the point where I need to get a car, but I've only got a credit card a few weeks ago and so have no credit history. I was hoping to finance a...
