Re: Moving Back the UK

The U.S.private healthcare system is not only a mess. but a disaster, IMO. Medical debt is the biggest cause of personal bankruptcy. It's estimated 26 million American have no health insurance and...

Re: Moving Back the UK

I found the thread starter's story and experience on moving back sobering and can very much sympathize. I have yet to make the move back, having delayed it for years as I consider the implications...

Re: ETA - Dual citizens must have valid UK passport

Hopefully it was either a joke or a misguided senator's attempt to gain favor from the extreme wing of his party. But I have to say what I sometimes thought were deranged ideas from the current WH...

Re: ETA - Dual citizens must have valid UK passport

I think that's right. I don't know how long ago the US required this, but definitely long before the recent UK requirement. What concerns me is the rumor that Trump wants to eliminate the right of US...

Re: ETA - Dual citizens must have valid UK passport

My impression is requiring a UK passport on entry is all part of increased security as the world becomes more and more dangerous and unstable. As is the eTA requirement for non citizens. To know who...

Re: US Tax Filing Question

From what I read, owning property, a car still registered there, or maintaining a state driver's license can be enough to be considered resident for state tax purposes. But as mentioned, can vary by...

Re: Moving back or trying after 50 years

One more question if I could. Outside of the house purchase process, can you continue to use Wise as your local bank for GBP transactions for local needs as if your local bank? Or is it still...

Re: Moving back or trying after 50 years

Thanks for the detailed background and information. Yes, this is exactly how I thought it works. I just need to contact OFX and see if they also maintain domestic banks for this purpose. I'm leaning...

Re: Moving back or trying after 50 years

Yes, similar in OFX in that once a destination bank and account is set up, no need to provide those details for future transfers. But I'm not clear if in your daughter's purchase, Wise transferred...

Re: Moving back or trying after 50 years

Sounds like your daughter's purchase went smoothly and well with Wise. With OFX, a destination bank with SWIFT code and account number needs to be set up before transferring funds. It that how it...

Re: Moving back or trying after 50 years

We'll be doing the same in moving to Isle of Man (from US) later this year or next. Also in our 70's and retired. Spouse and I are both UK/US citizens.

What also concerns me is how to buy a...

Re: Moving back to UK but sick with nerves

Although I haven't lived in the UK since a child, one of my motivations is the political situation here in the U.S. I'm retired now for a few years and assumed life here would be quiet and peaceful....

Re: Moving to Isle of Man

Interesting background and what I was looking for. Encouraging to hear a couple moving from the States are pleased with their decision. I'd think the weather would be quite a contrast from Florida,...

Re: Moving to Isle of Man

Thanks much, helpful information about Guernsey. Private health insurance looks required for coverage.

Re: Moving to Isle of Man

IOM sounds like it's definitely not for everyone. Most certainly will have to visit.

Many thanks to both above for your perspectives.

Brits1: Yes, Channel Islands would be interesting and similar, though possibly even more isolated and remote. But still something to consider....

Re: Moving to Isle of Man

Thanks again. Yes, flight or ferry to the mainland for some medical needs and procedures. But to me, that's not a comforting notion as it could become quite expensive, especially if many such visits...

Re: Moving to Isle of Man

Thanks much. My thoughts were along the same lines. The tax situation is one of the attractive reasons for me. And yes, rainy and damp but hopefully could get used to it. Also I understand that crime...

Moving to Isle of Man

Anyone moved or lived in Isle of Man as a UK citizen or from elsewhere? I'm considering retirement there (coming from U.S.), but it does seem somewhat isolated. I don't mind a quiet life, but of...

Re: Retiring in the UK - US/UK Tax Treaty questions

This thread is most relevant to me too, though I haven't gone through all the replies. My wife and I are both dual US/UK citizens, though we have practically not lived in the UK much at all. We're of...

Re: Moving back to scotland

Just to add to SanDiego girl, if your sister holds a UK passport there should be no question regarding right to work and access to NHS health care as far as proof. If no passport, it would be best to...

Re: Moving back to scotland

We also found Ontario everyday life to be expensive, especially housing. Toronto was a forget it, so we tried a small Ontario rural town where housing prices were much more reasonable. But the...

Re: Brits in Poland

I wish there was a subforum for Poland. Since my spouse is Polish with relatives there, some thought is being given to retiring in that country. In our case, that would be the central city of Lodz. I...

Re: Sex for rent issues in Dublin

I imagine this happens elsewhere too. But during a housing crisis just seems so unethical (leaving morality out of it).
