A villa in the sun with cat?

We're retired and heading for Faro again in a few days, hoping to find a detached house with garden for a long term or winter let in Central or Eastern Algarve. Our cat is part of the family, but...

Re: Halloween and feeling like an alien!

Yes, Wolverhampton is not far as the crow flies, but as someone unused to these roads - the speed, twists and turns and endless roundabouts - it's a long way. We like Northamptonshire, it has some...

Re: Halloween and feeling like an alien!

The great thing about the traditions are that you can leave and come back again a quarter of a century later, and they still carry on - like Corrie! It's the people you leave behind when you move...

Re: Halloween and feeling like an alien!

After living in 5 different countries, Canada the longest, I'm not sure that I can ever feel I really belong here. The curse of the expat! This is why this forum is such a help, perhaps we are a...

Re: Halloween and feeling like an alien!

What a wonderfully evocative tale you tell, Bev, and such lyrical prose! You've done my soul good.

Re: Halloween and feeling like an alien!

No, I don't remember that either, Guy Fawkes ruled and it's good to see it's still going strong. The two events are too close together, and I guess in the long run they'll merge. But much as I love...

Halloween and feeling like an alien!

This is our first Halloween back in UK. Tentatively asked a neighbour whether we should expect any Trick or Treaters this evening - "Oh no! We don't like that here, it's so American". After 30 years...

Re: shipping insurance - what to insure?

No, ships don't often sink, but container damage is commonplace - getting dropped during loading, or storm damage at sea when the cargo shifts. We had a couple of thousand dollars of damage on...

Re: Back 6 months and life is good!

Agreed, you have to organise shopping like a military campaign, stopwatch in hand. I think that's why everyone's shopping online and the high streets are struggling.

Re: Back 6 months and life is good!

Sunday trading is silly - our little village shop opens quite early, but on Sunday I had to wait at the counter watching the clock until precisely 10 am to buy newspaper, milk and a bottle of wine....

Re: Back 6 months and life is good!

The washing machine is [I]resting! No kidding. It locks the door on you, turns a couple of times, takes a tea break, turns, rests, adds a teaspoon of water, then stops for a full lunch break after a...

Re: Reviews of shipping companies back to the UK from Canada?

We shipped from Vancouver to UK last November with Williams. Price was competitive vs. other quotes, service seemed very professional, communications excellent. However one of the 3 packers on site...

Re: Back 6 months and life is good!

Sorry to hear that it may not be on the cards for you, but maybe fate will turn things around? We had the rug pulled out from under our feet when my OH's job ended but it had a silver lining since...

Re: Back 6 months and life is good!

Hello again, feelbritish, are you still hoping to return next year? You're right that we're spoiled in B.C. with lots of floor space, but we managed to find a house here with an old barn. It now...

Re: Back 6 months and life is good!

Thanks, just as well it is working out, we could never afford to do this all over again. But we're happy to live on bread and cheese indefinitely, especially Double Gloucester, Stilton, farmhouse...

Back 6 months and life is good!

Reporting in now as an "ex" Expat after 30 years near Vancouver. What a roller coaster this has been. In the early days of "ohmygawd what have we done?" BE was an essential emotional crutch as hubby...

Re: UK here we come (again!)

Actually we bought a new house, mostly over the internet! But I know the village a little and have a sibling nearby. Northants is also very central for travel. We were worried that selling our house...

Re: UK here we come (again!)

I've heard this - luckily it appears that UK private dentists cost a lot less than here in British Columbia, where dentists are all private. My OH has incurred about $4,000 in charges the past year.

Re: UK here we come (again!)

Yes, I read her posts and they're very reassuring. But the cats have to be delivered to Cargo at least 4 hours before the flight and processing at Heathrow will take 4-5 hours, so they have a very...

Re: UK here we come (again!)

Thanks, and I hope you make it back before too long as well. We were tied in the past by economic necessity but now are free to live in semi-retired genteel poverty in UK. It beats the 5.30 am...

Re: UK here we come (again!)

Thanks, if1. You'd think that practice (moving) would make perfect but it's a nerve-wracking process!
