You'll be calculating basis using the general rule. Growth would only have been subject to US tax if the individual was "highly compensated", which is quite a technical phrase.

A foreign trust is generally a BAD thing for a US person. If you the only trustee, it will be a US trust not a foreign trust, but this could lead to becoming an offshore trust with IHT chargeable....
