Re: School refusing a place without paying a fee

Yes it is a state school, not private. Thank you so much for your answer. That's very helpful.

Re: School refusing a place without paying a fee

Thanks Honey246 and spouse of scouse. I think I wasn't clear in my post. My son has a place at a sixth form college to study A levels. The college wants to charge us fees, stating that, as per the...

Thanks but his birthday is in a couple of weeks and he'll be 16. As I said he's due to go into sixth form.

School refusing a place without paying a fee

We recently returned to the UK with our 15 year old son and we're trying to enrol him at a sixth form college. The school tells us he isn't eligible for funding because he's been absent from the UK...

Transfer of Residence number confusion

We've been advised by our pet transport company that we need to apply for a Transfer of Residence number in order to import our cat into the UK. However, the application asks for evidence of...

Re: Sending ex-pat kid to UK university

She won't have to pay tuition fees to attend a further education college or sixth form, which is presumably where she would go at 16. Children resident in the UK are entitled to free education. It's...

Re: Australian passport and moving home

If the UK passport is still current, I can't see there would be any problem. All passports are new at some time! But he should use his British passport to enter the UK, or there may be a query appear...

Re: Is there an age, culturally/socially, when you wouldn't move the kids back?

I have three boys, 25, 23 and 12, and I'd say that moving during primary school has much less impact than moving during secondary education. Adolescence is a tough time for many kids and they find it...

Re: School/College Advice needed - college trying to charge fee

Glad to hear you got a good result. The college had its wires crossed on this one, which isn't surprising as the rules are a little complex. Children resident in the UK are entitled to free education...

Re: Taipei Questions

So glad you enjoyed your stay. I love living in Taiwan. Like everywhere else, it has its downsides (e.g look both ways before crossing at the green man) but for us they're far outweighed by the good....

Re: Taipei Questions

Yes, I had a very different idea of a typhoon before I came to Taiwan. I didn't realise how windy the UK is until I came here. What they call a typhoon is known as a bit of a blustery day back home,...

Re: Taipei Questions

We overlook the Jingmei River (we live opposite the zoo, which is a good place to visit, btw and you can also get the Maokong Gondola nearby, great fun) and the day after we moved into our flat three...

Re: Taipei Questions

I think for the Taiwanese they're just run of the mill and an opportunity for a day off work or school.

Some expats stock up on torches, candles, food and water. I even saw a post where someone...

Re: Problem with Student Finance England

Sadly this is the reality for many families returning to the UK. Many think the university accepting the child as a home student is all that's needed for to qualify for student loans, but all it...

Re: Getting kids back in school?

I would wait until September, when everyone's back from the long break and 'bonding' again. I think it's easier for kids to make friends then, especially as there will probably be other new children...

Re: Getting kids back in school?

I don't think it would be a problem if your children didn't attend school for those two weeks. The laws aren't that strict. If they were already attending a school and 'in the system' things would be...

Re: Taipei Questions

That sounds about right, Yorkieabroad. Short-term accommodation is in short supply, so expensive. Rental accommodation is generally expensive anyway in Taipei. Xindian is nice and it's on the red MRT...
