Re: Tax burden for US 401k to Roth IRA rollover under UK FIG regime

Does anyone know if the same reasoning/ classification applies to a Traditional IRA? If not, the solve (for anyone who hasn’t already done an in-plan conversion) would be to roll the 401k into an...

Re: Heading home after 17 years, with my new US husband

Update on our move, as we now have flights booked - we’ll be arriving in the UK Wednesday 26th November. Hopefully. Assuming our flights aren’t impacted by the shutdown chaos.

We’re...

Re: Keeping a US phone?

We’ve just done this ready for our move later this month. We set up an account with Tello, and ported over our long term US numbers from T Mobile. it was all very straightforward, and the switch...

Re: Heading home after 17 years, with my new US husband

I’m primarily moving to the UK for family reasons, to have more time with my parents, but I’ll actually be better off there financially, personally.

In the US, I’m a 12% marginal rate of tax...

Re: Heading home after 17 years, with my new US hu

Suffolk will actually be where we’ll start out when we get off the plane, as my parents live close to Lowestoft; I also have family in Stowmarket. At the moment, our thoughts are towards bigger...

Re: Heading home after 17 years, with my new US husband

Before we started getting rid of everything, we had 33 bikes between the two of us 😆. Granted, not all of them worked as some were project bikes that my husband had got on FB Marketplace for $10...

Re: Heading home after 17 years, with my new US hu

Sheffield definitely wins on central location, rental costs, and more chance of varied ethnic grocery stores, which we enjoy here. But more rainy and hilly, as dings against biking for transport.

Heading home after 17 years, with my new US husband

Hi all! Been a while since I was posting on here regularly (in the USA forum), but I’m about to make another international move and adjust to a ‘new’ country, so here I am for some chitchat and...

Re: Best way to recoup tax withheld on UK pension lump sum

Following up… I decided that I’d use Form 2002 (because Glasgow Girl’s advice is always the correct one 🙂), but hadn’t actually got any further than printing out the form to complete, as...

Re: Best way to recoup tax withheld on UK pension lump sum

Good point on the likely processing times - I’ll mail it after the holidays once the post pipeline is a bit clearer, and expect it to be dealt with some time in the next 12 months.

Appreciate...

Re: Best way to recoup tax withheld on UK pension lump sum

So it looks like I’ll be going the Form 2002 route after all.

I did a test pass through my usual software of FreeTaxUSA, and they don’t support the ability to take a foreign tax credit outside...

Re: Best way to recoup tax withheld on UK pension lump sum

Rightio, I’ll apply for a UTR (that I didn’t know I needed - thanks!), report back in a couple of months how the foreign tax credit scenario looks on this payout, and then follow up with anything...

Re: Best way to recoup tax withheld on UK pension lump sum

Thanks for such a thorough reply, and excellent useful information. Most importantly, I didn’t realize the foreign tax credit was calculated in that way; I’ve been thinking it’s a straight...

Re: Best way to recoup tax withheld on UK pension lump sum

Ah, I suspected that a UK refund might involve waiting 6 months. I think then that I’ll run the foreign tax credit scenario through the tax software, and see what it spits out.

Mobile check...

Re: Barclays closing expat bank accounts

I have a First Direct account, and they’ve been absolutely fine about me living overseas in first Switzerland (2008-2011), and now the US. They’ve had my address all along. Years back I remember...

Best way to recoup tax withheld on UK pension lump sum

Last month I cashed out a small UK final salary pension; the fund was being closed by my ex-employer and handed off to an insurance company, and it made financial sense for me to take my cut under...

Re: Renewing US passport - current times

Sorry, I wasn’t clear in my post - mine was a first time US passport, not a renewal. So I was especially pleased to get it processed more quickly than the times quoted, assuming there are extra...

Re: enquiry about reporting UK bank interests to HMRC

I’ve kept a UK bank account open (with First Direct) for the last 15 or so years since leaving the UK, but it’s only a checking/ current account, which pays no interest. This seemed to be the...

Re: Renewing US passport - current times

I did mine a few months ago, so not exactly current times, but the times are likely better now as the summer travel season is coming to an end.

I did the expedited service and paid for express...

Still in Ohio, yes. Graduated son, no… while he was taking a gap year during Covid to work full time instead, he met a girl, a co-worker at the grocery store. She was in an unstable, dysfunctional...

UK people can donate blood now

This is somewhat old news, but a year or two back the FDA lifted the ban on blood donations from people who lived in the UK during Mad Cow Times.

I can today personally attest that yes, they will...

Re: Current wait time for UK passport renewal

I sent mine FedEx, on their fully signed for service - worth the additional cost once a decade. Can’t remember the exact cost, but it was under $100 to send. Yes, that’s the usual UK passport...

Re: Current wait time for UK passport renewal

I renewed mine last month; the new one arrived about 10 days later.

I had one of my kids take iPhone snaps of me against a pale grey wall for the photo. When I uploaded it, it was first rated as...

Re: Covid-19 Vaccination -- Have You Gotten It?

How nice of you to remember about him! No, he’s got about 18 months of credits to go, but is actually on a gap year right now. When his campus shut down last March, he of course moved back home and...
