Buying the wrong thing.

A couple of times in Hungary I got caught out thinking cakes or pastries contained chocolate when it was actually poppy seeds. Some assumptions can prove dangerous, especially when it comes to...

Re: Home and garden projects

I gather summer temperatures in southern England have gone up in recent years to the point where air conditioning is worth having. I have not lived in England since 1997 and that was in the Midlands....

Re: Driving

It might have been worth having if it was old enough to be MoT exempt but I agree with the previous comment. Even if you were allowed to register a car in your name there it would be a nightmare...

Re: Car Spares Websites

OK, I found a supplier more easily than expected. I have now ordered them from alvadi.hu.

Car Spares Websites

I have been having car problems but here in Croatia I can't find the part I need. As Hungary has about double the population there might be a bigger range of spares available. I still have a HUF bank...

Re: Is there no gas central heating in Rural France?

Not sure if there are regional variations but I have seen homes in France with LPG tanks. In many countries the only utilities for a lot of rural properties are electricity and water. Each place has...

Re: Annus Horribilis

I thought it was just me who constantly had stuff going wrong! I've had loads of trouble with my central heating boiler which has now been out of action for about 2 months. As a temporary solution I...

Re: Annus Horribilis

Do you need a medical? Not sure if it is EU law or Hungary law but in Croatia you don't need a medical for a normal car licence. I took my UK test in 1982 when they were still giving you a licence...

Re: Has anybody?

That is a very good question as I was planning to do something similar in a few months time. I rent out my cottage in Scotland and it failed an electrical inspection. I was planning to drive from...

Re: Wise

When things go wrong it is more likely the UK bank is at fault rather than Wise. A while ago Virgin Money wrote to me saying they are closing all accounts of non UK residents. I still needed a UK...

Re: Experience of retirement in Hungary.

I retired to Hungary but found very few Hungarians speak English and Hungarian is a very hard language to learn. I felt very isolated as nobody in my village spoke English. I lived near the border...

Attitudes to Death

I am in various Facebook groups about dogs, mainly Beagles and Basset hounds. Something I find quite distressing is when American members post photos of their dead pet. I can understand them posting...

Re: Voluntary National Insurance top-up

I don't trust the government enough to want to give them any money. They have kept changing the rules, will there even be a state pension in a few years time? I have 34 years contributions so I think...

Re: UK and Hungarian State Pension

I did find it odd that in the form there was no provision for entering a UK type bank sort code, just IBAN and BIC. I entered these as bank details for my Virgin Money account. I hope my pension...

Re: Fitness to drive

I don't know if you have heard about the mandatory eyesight tests for drivers in UK over 70. Specsavers have the monopoly on testing so no chance of a second opinion from an eye hospital or whatever...

Re: Can I use my UK electric appliances in Germany?

I moved in 2011 and still have UK plugs on some items. My rule of thumb is that anything with a 13 amp fuse should have a new plug fitted rather than use an adapter. That means things like washing...

Re: UK Non-Resident Landlord Scheme, Relocation to Germany and rental taxation

I also still have a property in UK that I rent out. I have been completing a tax return each year but the rent income is below the personal allowance so I don't pay UK tax. I now also get a small...

Re: Keeping UK mobile number and UK bank accounts while living in Australia

I have had huge problems with Virgin Money (was Clydesdale Bank). They said they were closing all accounts of non UK residents but I needed a UK type account as I have 2 forms of income from UK. I...

Re: Winter Tyres

I only do about 5000 km a year so they were still good after about 6 years use. I gave the car away a few months ago so it is now someone else's problem.

Re: Winter Tyres

On the last car I took to leaving the winter tyres on all year but I think the Logan has 4 season tyres.

Re: Let's talk about cars

At my school in England there was no 6th form so no pupils had cars. Here at Konzum, Đurđevac there is a high school next door to the the supermarket and I suspect quite a few pupils park in the...

Re: Turkey for Christmas dinner - or not.

Plenty of people keep sheep but perhaps they only eat them as mutton?
