Re: Kent: so confused as no one seems to like any of the towns?

I can add my 2 pence worth, as I have now been living in the area for almost a year ;)

We have moved to Bromley, which is South-East London/Kent borders. Due to school allocations, we ended up in...

Re: Brit pensioners moving back to England

With the Rand being so weak at the moment, I wouldn't bother with bringing too much over. It is hellishly expensive to move stuff (we've done it 8 months ago.) Things are really more affordable here...

Re: Yet another question about backdated NI contributions

Our problem is that we have both only had 6 years employment in the UK when we left. We are both in our 40's now, so in order to make up the 35 years we will both have to work until we are about 74....

Re: UK Primary school admission from overseas??

I can share my experience with in-year admissions, although we are in a London borough. I'm not sure whether schools are as oversubscribed in the rest of the country.
We identified quite a large...

Red face Yet another question about backdated NI contributions

Hi everyone, I haven't been on the forum for ages! We have moved back in May and have settled in pretty well. Our greatest obstacles were finding a rental property without a credit record (even...

Re: West Sussex

Sorry, I'm chipping in :)
I know the OP, so I thought I'd answer for her as she doesn't seem to be on line atm. Her husband's job is in Burgess Hill.

Re: Enrolling in schools - midway through the year

We now live in Petts Wood. What a lovely area :). My daughter (8) is in Crofton Junior School.

We are in a horrible flat though, as it was the only one we could secure at short notice without a UK...

Re: Non-English language paperwork?

We had huge problems trying to open a business banking account, because they had difficulty verifying our South African Head Office's address due to the paperwork being in Afrikaans.

Re: Enrolling in schools - midway through the year

Entirely depending on how oversubscribed schools are in the area you are planning to return to! We started contacting schools in advance, but they could not hold on to any vacancies for us. Once we...

Re: Where to move in Essex/Kent/East Sussex?

I don't know about living in East Sussex (I love it though). I've lived in Essex and Kent. Loved both. It all depends on whether you are going to work in London or not. I think for practical reasons...

Re: What is Ashford Kent like to live

I agree, we lived in a village between Ashford and Canterbury for 6 years. It is a pleasant area, probably the most affordable homes in the South East and the countryside is stunning. Hop skip and...

Re: Moving to UK with kids - Questions about schooling

Hi Leafykaren! We've made the move from South Africa to the UK only 6 weeks ago, and it already feels like a lifetime ago!
Hertfordshire is great for schools. You do however need to do your...

Re: NHS card and GP registration

Yes, complete understand new rules and why they've been implemented. But I don't think we fall into that category? Anyway, we'll see what happens today and whether I get a response from the practice...

Sooo...today my husband was refused registration with our local GP surgery, because he had forgotten his NHS number :thumbdown:

I still had both my and my daughter's cards in my purse, but my...

Re: Looking for South African families in the UK

Have to agree unfortunately :(
Things got really expensive since we lived here in the mid 2000's.

Depending on where you live, you can expect to pay anything from £650 - £1250 pm for a 2 bed...

Yay! Our ONE WAY tickets are booked for the 25th of this month!

I never ever thought that we would ever get to this point. We had so many obstacles in our way throughout this whole process. But...

Re: How Much Money Did You Bring Back

I'd think £30k is a pretty good start. We don't have nearly as much. The main thing to be able to cover is rent for the first few months! We're moving to London/Kent borders and we've budgeted...

Re: Tale of two returnees.

DD = Dear Daughter
DS = Dear Son
DH = Dear Husband
OH = Other Half

I hope to God that we will fall into the first category. Thing is, you will never know in advance, will you? :(

Re: Advice Needed - Moving to Kent

Personally I'd stay away from Chatham. Not a very nice place IMHO. I don't know Maidstone town all that well either, but I do know the surrounding countryside and it is beautiful. I love Kent....

Re: Camping/Caravaning in the UK

When we lived in the UK we did lots of camping. We once did a road trip from Kent to the Scottish Highlands, camping all the way. We've only ever had one bad experience at a certain campsite in...

I am probably in the minority here, but I would choose London every time. I love London, there is just so much to see and do, whatever your interest or tastes are. Especially for a single person. And...

Short-term accommodation in Hastings, very affordable.

Re: Born in UK but lived in Oz for 20 years! How do I get home?

We haven't established whether the OP is a British citizen or not. Born in the UK doesn't equal being a British citizen!
