i landed August 14th, and my PR card expires five years later on September 9th (i guess it was issued on sept 9th). does anyone know when the countdown begins - aug 14th or sept 9th?

that's a good point - no it does not say how many kilometers i am given for free. from their calculation i can see that they didn't charge me for the first 200km, but this is not stated anywhere...
