Re: Does Australia suffer from inferiority-complex?

WTF are you smoking? I classify the 13th largest economy as insignificant, anything outside the top 5 or 6 are relatively small economies with little to no clout.

What has Australia "achieved"...

Re: Does Australia suffer from inferiority-complex?

I don't get being proud of your nationality. You have no control over where you were born, so being proud of it is ridiculous. You can feel lucky that you were born in a first-world country but not...

Re: Does Australia suffer from inferiority-complex?

It most certainly does, it is forever in the USA's shadow.

I think Australia used to have a healthy modesty which may have been construed as an inferiority complex. I much preferred that to the...

Re: Would you recommend Australia to a good friend?

I voted no, but it does depend on their circumstances. On balance I couldn't really recommend Australia to any of my good friends in the UK or the USA. Their standard of living would decline too...

Re: Gillard is accused of being wooden then, next day, blubs in parliment

Yes. I can get the same media as you do and I am in constant contact with a large number of family and friends in Australia as well as Australian political groups abroad.

Re: Gillard is accused of being wooden then, next day, blubs in parliment

Yes the media took it out of context, but what's new? It was worth it to see how pathetic a man Abbott really is. Job well done imo.

Re: Gillard is accused of being wooden then, next day, blubs in parliment

She ain't great, but Abbott would be far worse. That latest stunned silence by him after being shown his "sh*t happens" indiscretion proves that guy isn't fit to be PM!

Re: Gillard is accused of being wooden then, next day, blubs in parliment

Julia is wooden. Tony is an idiot. I'd take wooden over idiocy any day.

Re: Jobs in IT sector

Data Analysts don't really require specialist skills compared to many other tech roles. I find it VERY hard to believe your claim that even some are making $350k a year. Got any links, etc. to back...

Re: It's a big country with a small population....

There are many reasons that goods should be more expensive in Australia than the USA, but the price disparity is beyond what should be expected. Part of it is the culture in Australia that you just...

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

If I had to do that there is no way I would've moved to the USA!

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

Healthcare is a big deal here, however, if you are a skilled professional you are likely to have good health coverage through your employer. I've found myself paying less out of pocket here than my...

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

True no comparison. The USA is a far better place to live. :p

Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living

I didn't quit Oz due to the high COL, but it was a major factor in my decision not to return there from the UK and to instead seek a better lifestyle in the USA. The COL contrast is even sharper...

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

You thought wrong. Change the plug (or use adapters) and the bulb and you're good to go. It's just a couple of copper wires going to a bulb housing and this housing is standard, so the 240v bulbs...

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

Anything you can fit into the container!

Not sure if it applies to you, but baby and kid stuff is particularly cheap in the USA vs. Oz.

I think some of the newer TVs can be switched between PAL...

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

This is true for most people, however my employer pays 100% of premiums and I have $0 copays. You'll more pay that $400-600 in income tax and higher col in Australia. Obviously you are not moving...

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

I have been fortunate enough to have very good employer paid healthcare here, as do most IT professionals. Good point though, although I hear my Aussie friends complaining about health care costs a...

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

That's because they use REAL sugar in the Coke in Oz. They use High Fructose Corn Syrup here and the corn industry in the US is heavily govt. subsidised. I try to avoid HFCS so buy the more...

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

I reckon you'd be lucky to find anything that is cheaper in Oz than in the USA? This is my experience at least in California and Americans think it's an expensive state!

I've never had to pay...

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

What's your area of expertise? Even in the midst of the recession a lot of people I know in tech were commanding higher rates/salary in London than comparable roles in Oz (Sydney/Melbourne)

Re: Why are IT salaries in OZ so less(Comparitively)

Ever since I can remember similar IT jobs pay 20-40% less in Oz than in Europe or North America. This problem is even more acute now with the cost of living so high in Oz.
