You need to contact the Future Pension Centre. They will advise you how many years you need and which years to pay. In my case it wasn’t worth paying any years prior to 2016 and I require 40 years....

Yes, I ended up with 40 years to get the full pension. I had been contracted out many years ago, not that knew it at the time 😁.

Non residents can open an NS&I account, but you have to have a UK bank account. It’s relatively easy to open over the telephone, some products are not available to non residents - ISA’s for example.

I didn’t transfer any of my UK pensions to Canada, so can’t help you regarding that. I have a small local authority pension and both this and my NHS pension get paid monthly. Both increase annually...

NS&I allow people living overseas to open certain accounts. I recently set one up over the telephone and it was quite simple. I did need to get proof of my Canadian address certified.
