This is all guesswork - if's and maybe's. Has anyone spoken to the big boys in car hire who operate in other countries that have tolls ? Hertz, Avis etc - I am sure they must have a policy in place.

Try Via Michelin website to get best route Santander to Algarve which is via Merida (good Parador in centre town) and Sevile - quiet fast route with no tolls.

The Hog is right. In my opinion the occasional foray on to the A22 with a foreign registered car is not going to be pursued by Portugal. Cannot say the same if police patrrols are stepped up which...

'Twas always so in Portugal. Pre E#U days we even had to pay the Customs Agents (Despechantes) to clear our imported goods on top of the duty, IVA etc

If local office of carrier cannot help try FAOTIR in Faro - they used to be despechantes (customs agents) but check on any fees first.

Sounds a good solution and I like the idea of being able to use box on alternative vehicles. I wonder what max rental time is and how do you know when the pre-charged amount is used up ?

Yes I saw the road works on Monday so it looks like all is going ahead despite the 'protests'. Whatever one thinks we do know the Portuguese Govt needs the money badly - this kind of fiscal...

CSE I do not think you can compare the North to our dear little A22. As I said before the revenue from the A22 East of Faro would not pay much at all.

How many Police have you seen on the A22 ? To put more Police on there will eat up any money gained by tolls - ditto for toll booths

I think Joao is over estimating the incoming traffic of motor caravans and Spanish - the former only arrive in Winter in comparatively small numbers and the Spanish usually arrive in numbers during...

As an ex Londoner I can assure you it is road toll - try to enter the congestion charge area and not pay and you will quickly find out.
