Re: Windsor, ON 2017

Have you heard about the planned high speed rail link between Windsor and Toronto?

I'm not sure it's altogether a good idea, but it might invigorate the Windsor economy and inflate house prices a...

Re: French Immersion

Great question. Obviously we're biased, but his language ability seems to be very good and he's a smart kid. He has a wide vocabulary and talks non stop, all day ...drives us insane actually.

So...

My 5 year old son is due to start in an SK FI programme in September and I'm...

Re: Transferring money pre referendum.

Mate, count yourself lucky.

I moved over a large sum 4 years ago when it was $1.59! I had to move quickly to buy a property.

You have to be philosophical about these things ....in other words...

Re: Looking for QROPS personal finance expert

I recently used these guys to move my UK Scottish Widows pension into an RRSP and it was quite a painless experience so I would recommend them.

As soon as the GBP exchange rate improves (well, I...

Re: Moving to Ontario!

Look at www.realtor.ca to buy, www.viewit.ca to rent.

If you're mostly working from home you might want to live a bit further from downtown, to get more bang for your buck (as they say).

Re: Torontonians suggestions plz

Threads like this really make me wish there was more to do in Toronto!

To add to the OPs list - I'd recommend Casa Loma and the Distillery District, if they haven't been mentioned already.

Plunging exchange rate

In a bit of a panic here! I'm slap bang in the middle of bringing my UK pensions over to Canada.

This morning I see sterling has plunged to 1.93 and is still going down, presumably due to the fuss...

Re: Is anyone else massively disappointed in Canada?

Actually good point, after living and working in multicultural TO for 8 years most of the people I've met and the friends I've made were not born and raised in Canada.

Maybe there's something in...

Re: Is anyone else massively disappointed in Canada?

I think it's mostly down to architecture.

Looking out of my office window here in NE Toronto I have to say the multitude of buildings I can see look drab, boring and purely functional.

Then...

Re: Is anyone else massively disappointed in Canada?

Why the emphasis on travelling anyway, does it give you extra kudos or bragging rights to be able to reel off a list of exotic locations you've visited? It's a bit like the page on FB where you can...

I arrived for the first time at Toronto Pearson airport on a 1 year work secondment on a freezing cold January day in 2008.

8 years, 1 divorce, 4 jobs, 3 relocations, 1 new relationship and 2 kids...

Re: Toronto neighbourhoods

Agreed, when I first came to Toronto I lived on Harbourfront and really enjoyed living there. It can be a little pricey though and we're not sure what the OPs budget is.

I think he's trying to be witty, Church & Wellesley is in the heart of Toronto's gay village. Incidentally I used to live there (despite being straight) and it was actually quite a fun place to live...

Re: QROPS new rules 2015

I had a call from them just before Xmas. Apparently they got my details by looking on LinkedIn to find people who used to work in the UK but now work in Canada.

I was going to talk to them but...

I'm currently in the process of moving over my personal pensions, so I'm quite happy with the exchange rate right now. Unlike 5 years ago when I sold my UK house and moved over the money at 1.59...

They seem legit, but it would be great to hear some genuine...

Re: Housing 'bubble' in Vancouver

It baffles me how people make ends meet, both here and in the UK.

Either people have an enormous amount of debt or they're doing without ....or both.
