I received an I-797C letter from Citizen and Immigration Services in Texas, titled "Welcome Notice", saying they have received the paper work from my port of entry, saying I should hear from them...

I am in a similar situation, where I want to fly over to activate my IR1 so I can get my SSN, to enable me to get a pre-approved mortgage so we can buy a house ahead of actually moving the family...
